At 6'6" Basil Smotherman has the type of game most coaches clamor for; he can shoot the three, rebound and start the break, score on the inside, and pass.
John Beilien is certainly among those coveting this talent youngster and recently Smotherman and his father during a visit the weekend of the Michigan - Michigan State football game. The Hoosier State star came away very impressed with the Maize & Blue.
"I had a very nice visit at Michigan they have a nice campus and I like the coaching staff," Smotherman said. "I had a good time talking with them. It feels good to get to know them and for them to get to know me. Coach said he has seen me play and that I can be a great player, but I must rebound and play defense."
Indiana, Purdue and Michigan State are also giving early chase and definitely have the sophomore forward's attention. Hwever, at this stage of his recruitment he's not yet ready to annoint any school his leader.
Explained Smotherman, "I have really liked visiting all of the schools, but I am just taking my time and seeing what is out there so when the time comes I can make the best decision for myself.".
It helps that the talented youngster is accompanied by his father on every visit and receives very sound advice concerning the recruiting process.
"My dad always talks with me," said Smotherman. "He says to take my time, be loyal, and to think about what I would like to do. He wants me to stay humble during this process and learn as we go through it."
With a college decision still a year or two away, Smotherman's primary focus is on to helping his high school team do big things this season.
"Overall I would like to help take our team to the state finals, as a player I need to get to the free throw like more and take over games more."
With his humbleness and his father's guidance the sky is the limit for Basil Smotherman.
