Visiting With Ronald Talley

While in Detroit recently, I decided to drop by Renaissance High School to speak with coach William Hill and his star pupil, Ronald Talley. This very impressive prospect was seen getting noticeable attention at a recent junior day at Michigan. Ronald gives us the latest on his recruitment and his decision timetable.

Jim S. put together a very nice profile on Ronald a few months ago. It can be found here. I suggest that those who haven't read it check it out.

Ronald Talley must look like a man amongst boys on the football field because this kid is every bit of his listed size. However, what's more impressive is he's a genuinely nice and very well spoken kid. I appreciate the time that both he and Coach Hill took out of their days to speak with me.

What positions do you play?

I play DE, DT, and OT. I also played some at linebacker and fullback.

What type of season did you have last year?

Last year I had a pretty good season, but this year I plan to dominate. I didn't dominate last year like I wanted to. We were 6-4 and lost in the first round of the state playoffs by one point.

What schools are you hearing from right now?

Off the top of my head, Michigan, Minnesota, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Florida, and Boston College.

Any offers yet?

No not yet.

Do you have a favorite?

My top two schools right now are Michigan and Northwestern.

Who's recruiting you for Michigan?

Erik Campbell.

What position is Michigan recruiting you for?

Defensive End.

Can you list your height, weight, and forty time?

I'm 6'4", 235lbs, and I run a 4.7.

Do you know any players on the team?

I met Larry Stevens when I went to Michigan for a junior day that I was invited to.

Are you going to be at the Nike Camp?

How about Michigan's summer camp?

I'm going to be there too.

Do you play any other sports?

I played basketball the last few years, but now I want to focus on football because like I told you, my goal is to be dominant!

Are you looking to make an early decision or are you going to wait until the end?

I think I'm going to wait until February. I want to be sure that I'm making the right decision.

Coach Hill sat around and spoke with me another 45 minutes or so after Ronald left. As Jim S. indicated in his profile, Coach Hill is one of the true gentleman of the PSL.

Describe Ronald as a player for me.

He's a kid that has extremely long arms, very good speed, and great quickness. Another thing is he's a totally different kid when he steps on the football field. He's MEAN on the football field! He's about 6'4" and 238 lbs. right now. By the end of the school year he should be about 245lbs. He's going to be a very good football player. Last year he was nicked up a bit with a shoulder injury. He started off the year slow. One of the reasons for that was the injury. He wasn't able to get into the weight room like he wanted to.

How much is he benching?

Well, here we don't really do MAX tests. We concentrate more on reps. The last time we checked, he repped 185 pounds 29 times and 225 pounds 11 times. We'll probably do a MAX test in the spring.

What schools do you know are looking at him?

Well, he's hearing from every school in the Big 10. He's also hearing from Syracuse, Notre Dame, and Tennessee. One school has come on really strong as of late, and that's Maryland. There are some kids from the area that play in the ACC and they also have a coach that used to work in this area so they are very aware of him (Ronald).

What position do you think he projects at in college?

Definitely defensive end.

What do you think will be the most important factors in his decision?

I think location will be a big factor because he's been around here all of his life and he's really close with his mom. The other factors will be academics and the coaching staff. One of the things I stress is for my kids to never make a decision based only on football. I want them to be at a place where if they break their leg, they'll still be guaranteed a good education.
