EVANSTON, Ill -- The Michigan basketball team fell to 11-8 on the season and 1-5 in Big 10 play with a 74-60 loss to the Northwestern Wildcats on Tuesday night at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston.
Stu Douglass led Michigan with 17 points and Darius Morris added 16 and four assists. Tim Hardaway Jr. added eight points and seven rebounds in the loss.
NU was led by 24 points and eight rebounds from John Shurna. Luka Mirkovic added 13 and eight for the Wildcats, and Michael Thompson finished with 10 points.
In the first half the Northwestern Wildcats opened up a 44-31 lead over the visiting Wolverines. The teams battled back-and-forth to a 10-10 tie over the first four minutes before Northwestern pulled ahead 18-10 on a pair of Shurna triples.
A Shurna triple with 5:45 left in the half pushed the lead to 34-22. Michigan answered with a Matt Vogrich tip in, but Northwestern finished the stanza with an 13-point lead.
The second half saw Northwestern open the lead up to as many as 22 points. Darius Morris scored Michigan's first five points of the second half before a Douglass triple, but at the 11:19 mark the lead was extended back to 22 points.
Over the final 10 minutes the Wolverines trimmed into the Northwestern lead but never got within 12 points.
The Wolverines return back to Ann Arbor on Saturday night to meet the Minnesota Golden Gophers at 7:00 p.m.
