Chris Barnett Talks Michigan

The Arkansas soft-verbal took a visit to Michigan this weekend to check out what the Wolverines had to offer. GoBlueWolverine caught up with the Texas tight end to get his thoughts on the visit, his status and when he will sign his LOI.

Chris Barnett, the 6'6" 249 pound tight end from Hurst (TX), committed to Arkansas early in his recruiting process, but recently decided that he wanted to take a few visits to be sure. In the last recruiting weekend, he took in Ann Arbor and the Michigan Wolverines.

"It was fun," Barnett told GoBlueWolverine. "The first time we got there, we went to Schembechler Hall and took a mini-tour and talked to some of the coaches because we were the first ones there. After that we had dinner at the Big House, so that was really exciting. We went down on the field and it was full of snow but they had the "M" uncovered and that was really, really exciting. Then we left there and hung out with our hosts. Like I had a host, but we were always with a lot of people. I was with Devin Gardner, Patrick Omameh, Junior Hemingway and a few other guys. When we got back Saturday, it was the academic meetings and the tour of the campus and position meetings and stuff. It was really getting into what it's like to be at Michigan. On Sunday we met with the coaches."

Even as a soft-commitment to Arkansas, Barnett is definitely thinking about the Wolverines and what they have to offer.

"Yeah, I'm thinking about them. If I wasn't, I wouldn't have taken the visit. I just got back so I haven't really had any time to think about it and really weigh my pro's and con's. It was a really great trip and I had a great time."

Barnett also spent a lot of his visit talking to the coaches about their plans for him should he choose to don the Maize and Blue.

"The coaches before they started talking about, they talked about what they want out of their players and what they want from everybody. They have a three strike rule and they have a lot of structure for their athletic program. You kind of want that off the field and in the classroom. But talking to the coaches, they only have two tight ends on the depth chart and one they just moved back from defensive end, so they were like ‘You're going to play if you're ready.' They have multiple tight end sets and the tight end is a primary receiver when they were at San Diego State and they want to bring that here. It looks good if you play tight end."

Barnett,'s no. 16 rated tight end, also got a chance to hang out with members of the team and other prospects that were on a visit as well.

"Out of the people I was hanging out with, I was the only one not committed to Michigan. We were at one of the houses with a bunch of guys on the team playing Xbox and just chilling and one of the guys asked if I was a recruit, and I was like yeah, and he goes you committed to Michigan? Kevin Koger goes guess what, he's committed to Arkansas so they gave me a hard time the whole weekend (laughing)."

One of those recruits he was spending time with was Antonio Poole, one of the newest members of Michigan's recruiting class, who was also with Barnett last week when they both tripped to Miami (FL).

"We talked about it and he told me why he decided to go to Michigan after the Miami visit. We kicked it Miami too and we were doing the same at Michigan. He told me a lot of the things about how he felt about the program and why he decided to go there."

Recruiting fans of the teams still in the running will have to wait a few days past signing day to know of Barnett's plans.

"I'm planning on signing Friday or Saturday."
