His Recruiting Story
Michigan fans remember the venom filled banter the Purdue staff had for the previous Michigan regime when they snagged receiver Roy Roundtree from Purdue right around signing day in Rodriguez's first recruiting class. Well apparently Coach Hoke may have a little "snake-oil" as well.

The change in offensive philosophy to a pro-style scheme, and the loss of Tate Forcier from the football program, made picking up a quarterback a priority. In his junior campaign Bellomy rushed for six scores and tossed another 13. His ability to get it done as a dual threat quarterback had schools the likes of Illinois, Northwestern, Tulsa, Kansas, Kansas State, Minnesota, Houston, Vanderbilt, Oregon, Florida, USF and Boston College vying for his talent. Lack of depth and the lure of the Big 10 initially drew Russell to Purdue, however, when the new Wolverine coach came calling all that changed. Bellomy had always had interest in Ann Arbor, but drew no interest from Rodriguez's staff. When the new staff said they were interested, he quickly signed up for an official and flipped the script to Michigan.

In his senior season Russell completed 114 of his 194 passes for 1,584 yards and 15 touchdowns. He also rushed for 805 yards and nine scores on his way to a state regional play-off appearance.

His Commitment Comments
"Well about an hour after I committed we were dropped off at the airport and I went in through the terminal and made a call to (Purdue) Coach Danny Hope," said Bellomy. "I knew it would be a tough call and it was. I just told him that I am decommitting from Purdue and committing to Michigan. I am sure there were hard feelings and rightfully so, but Coach Hope wished me well." Russell went on to say, "Michigan has always been a dream school for me."

GoBlueWolverine Commentary
Russell Bellomy has nice height, but could put on some weight before he's ideal size for a pro-style quarterback in the Big 10. He is a dual-threat quarterback, but in the Elite 11 he was solid in just about each and every drill. He takes care of the ball and has a great understanding of not only what he's doing but what everyone else is doing around him. He has elusiveness in the pocket and shows ample arm strength on the deep ball. When running he hits his holes decisively.
