Sam Webb: I heard that you received an offer from Michigan. Was it a surprise or had they been on your really hard prior to that?
A.J. Williams: "(The offer) came through about two weeks ago, or a week ago. Honestly, I have only talked to them when the new staff came in. When they got the guy from San Diego State, that was my first time talking to them. Then a couple of weeks later they did their homework and they offered."
Sam Webb: Do you remember which coach you talked to?
A.J. Williams: "Coach (Mark) Smith."
Sam Webb: What kind of vibe did you get off of Coach Smith?
A.J. Williams: "You can tell he was definitely about his business. You can tell there was a lot to him. When he offered me, he was just like, ‘tell all those other schools to move out of the way because Michigan is here.' There is just nothing like a coach when he gets fired up. He was just like, ‘yeah, let us go! (laughter)"
Sam Webb: What about position? You're versatile and can play a couple different spots. What position is Michigan recruiting you for?
A.J. Williams: "They recruiting me for tight end, but at the same time with my body type I could grow into playing tackle or D-end. Whatever my body grows into, maybe if I get faster, stay a tight end, put on some weight and go to tackle, just stay at the high end and play D-end."
Sam Webb: Do you have a preference right now of which one you would rather play?
A.J. Williams: "I would rather play tight end because I like pancaking, but at the same time, I like to get out and catch passes a couple of times.
Sam Webb: How did your high school season go?
A.J. Williams: "I established myself well as a blocker. I think I for sure solidified myself as a pretty good blocker. Passing wise, it was kind of a downgrade, we had an option style offense. We only threw the ball twice a game. As a blocker, I definitely solidified. I mean it was pancake, pancake, pancake. Now it is just more so, I'm trying to prove myself as a receiver too as a tight end."
Sam Webb: So is that the scouting report on you? More of a blocking tight end at this point?
A.J. Williams: "Definitely for sure block first. My run blocking I think is exceptional. But I can line up wide and get a corner or two at the same time and catch a ball."
Sam Webb: What is your current height, weight and 40 time?
A.J. Williams: "I'm 6'6". I'm 270 and I run like a 5 flat."
Sam Webb: What schools have offered you scholarships so far?
Sam Webb: Are any of the schools sticking out right now as a favorite?
A.J. Williams: "I really do not technically have too many favorites. The Big Ten sticks out more than the MAC kind of, just because it is a big conference. No particular favorites or anything, just keeping my options open and just exploring it."
Sam Webb: Have you been to Michigan before?
A.J. Williams: "No. I plan to get into Michigan two weekends from now and while I'm up there check out Michigan State. It'll be before spring break because I'm going down to Florida for spring break, so I'm going to try and get out there before spring break."
Sam Webb: Have you given any thought to a timeline for when you'd like to make a decision?
A.J. Williams: "I'm just going to try and wait it out and see how things are going. Maybe after my senior season -- see what kind of offers my senior season brings me. After that just take it from there. So sometime after football season (during) basketball season."
Sam Webb: Are you going to go to any of these school camps at all?
A.J. Williams: "Naw I don't plan on going to camp. I just plan on taking visits."
Sam Webb: What are going to be the most significant factors in your choice?
A.J. Williams: "Definitely education that always comes first. Of course playing time is always going to be a factor -- if I'm going to play early or if I am redshirt, which I wouldn't mind doing. The most important thing is (comfort)-- how it feels when I'm at the college -- how they treat you because it is my second home. I want to make sure that it is definitely going to feel that way."
Sam Webb: You talk home – what about your home state school is Ohio State? I didn't hear you mention them. What is going on with the Buckeyes right now?
A.J. Williams: "I haven't talked to Ohio State in a while. They used to come to the school a lot to recruit a lot, but honestly I have not really talked to them much lately."
GoBlueWolverine will have more on Williams in the weeks and months to come.
