When Mentor (OH) DE Tom Strobel made his way to Michigan's spring game last month, he came away with a strong appreciation for both the program and the coaching staff charged with bringing it back to prominence. But as impressed as he was with that experience, there was still more he needed to know about one of his top suitors. Saturday during another visit to Ann Arbor he gathered the information he had been looking for.
"This time it was more so about academics," recalled Strobel. "I got a little bit both (football and academics) last time, but this time I wanted to see the different (academic) places where I would be and what not. Everything went real well. The visit went real good. We spent a few hours there. It was a good day."
The aspiring business major was particularly interested in learning more about Michigan's renowned business school. Needless to say, he got an eyeful.
"I went inside there and it was so gorgeous," said Strobel. "It was just incredible how it was set up. There was glass everywhere and it was just brand new basically. It was just so nice. I was really appreciative of that. I got to see around it with one of the head guys with the business school."
While much of the visit was spent gaining a more in-depth understanding of Michigan's academics, there was also ample time spent enhancing his already strong rapport with Brady Hoke & company.
"They talked about what they expect from their players and what you should be doing. I get it done in the classroom and on the field. They also talked about what type of football player that they wanted me to be and how it is just what they expected and what they thought of me. It was really nice and positive."
With Michigan's recruiting success of late, particularly on the defensive side of the ball, one of the primary topics of discussion on the day was Strobel's decision timeline.
"They definitely think highly of me and I really appreciate that," he said. "They just definitely really said that they would like me to come there. They just said if you were going to (commit), the sooner the better. It would make it better for them."
At the moment no decision appears to be on the horizon, but the Wolverines definitely help their chances with their strong presentation.
"They stack up near the top, no doubt in my mind," Strobel stated regarding Michigan. "There is also Stanford, Ohio State, Michigan State, and Notre Dame. Those are all very good schools to me. There are a couple of others too."
"I'm definitely going to take a trip out to Stanford and see what they have to offer. Maybe even Nebraska for all I know. They just offered too and that is a very nice school. I will probably go back up to (Michigan State). I still have to make another visit to Notre Dame too. I have made a lot of visits down to Ohio State already. I'm going to take another one, but I'm not really sure what is going on yet. There are a few places that I would like to still visit and be sure about my decision."
Exactly when that choice will come is still a bit up in the air.
"I would expect it to come during the senior season," said Strobel. "I could make a decision before the season for all I know. Until I feel good about it, I will (not) make that decision."
