Courtney Smith, the mother of Anthony Standifer, talks about how her son decided that Michigan was the place for him.

To speak with Courtney Smith is to speak with a mom who understands the recruiting game -- she is clearly a quick learner.

"Having a chance to do my research on the schools that were recruiting my son aided me very well in understanding what was going on. When I would speak with coaches I let them do the talking, so that I could learn from them and listen to what their plans were for my son."

A week ago she told GoBlueWolverine that they were coming up to Ann Arbor to visit Michigan, and then Notre Dame would be shortly after. What happened during the visit she did not expect at all.

"The visit went real well. We were up there for six to seven hours :me, Anthony, his dad, and uncle-- and all of our questions were answered! I like the fact that they looked me straight in the eyes while they were speaking with me.  The staff was very personable. I put my hand out to shake their hand and they gave me a hug. There was not one coach that forgot my name, not once -- that meant a lot to me. You have to remember Michigan was the very first BCS School to offer Anthony, and it was a very genuine offer. Coach Mattison said after he watched film of my son that, 'he was handpicked as a recruit to fit in my defense and I want him'."

So how did it happen that Anthony committed at the visit?

"The staff was very straight forward with us, and they did not put any pressure on us to commit at all. They told us to go and take our visits, with no one pressuring us about Anthony committing on the spot. SO we go on the tour and then meet with the coaches, Coach Mallory, Coach Mattison -- we talk with them for a while and then we said our good-byes. As we were leaving the offices Anthony turns to me and says, "Mom, I want to be here -- I want to commit to Michigan. I tell Anthony to relax and we will talk about it, we can check out more schools -- but he says, "No mom, this is where I want to be. I like the coaching staff and the school. I don't want to waste anymore of your time -- this is where I want to be." I said to him, "Are you sure?" And he said, "Yes!" His dad and uncle felt the same way. Well, we decided to go and get something to eat and to talk about it some more. After we talked about it he still wanted to be at Michigan. We tried going back up to the school so he could meet with the coaches, but they were gone. So we called Coach Hoke and Anthony committed to him over the phone.

I am happy with his decision. Michigan is a good school and I am comfortable with his decision. At the end of the day, as a mom, it is all about the best place that my child will be able to achieve his best -- so I am happy with his decision."

Ms. Smith had originally told us that they were coming up to check things out, and look what happened -- her son is now a Michigan Wolverine!
