Top West Coast LB Grew Up U-M Fan

Considered perhaps Califorinia's top linebacker, Pomona's Eugene Germany talked to yours truly yesterday (Thurs.).

We had heard that Eugene Germany (USC Nike stats: 6-3 1/2, 248 lbs. {he didn't work out, just got measured} … 4.65 in the 40) from Pomona, Calif. was the 'real deal ' -- and grew up a Wolverine fan. So we talked to him last night to find out, and we talked to Pomona's defensive coordinator John Brown during the day as well.

For the record, as a junior linebacker Germany made 166 tackles and nine sacks; as a tight end he caught 14 passes for 321 yards (22.9 yards per catch) and four touchdowns.

I asked Coach Brown to talk about Germany as a player.

Coach Brown: "He's a man among boys. He's a big kid. And he's still going to grow and get bigger -- he doesn't shave yet. He's a player, with tremendous upside. He overpowers and muscles people. He also has a high motor, and good speed too."

Eugene: "I think my strong point as a player is reading the play. I have good vision too, and I'm a hitter."

Where will Eugene end up playing in college?

Coach Brown: "I think he'll probably play with one hand down at the next level, defensive end ... or even possibly the three-technique (defensive tackle). But in the Big Ten he could play as a big linebacker, they like their backers big in the Big Ten."

What is Eugene like as a person?

Coach Brown: "He's outgoing, fun to hang out with. He's a leader by example: he's not rah-rah, he's not going to yell out there, he goes out there and plays."

Who has offered Eugene?

Eugene: "Oregon, Oregon State, Tennessee, and UCLA."

Coach Brown: "He has a UCLA offer, Tennessee said they're offering, Oregon State and Oregon have offered. Michigan has said they're interested in offering him, they'll be at the school later this month. This is the evaluation period, so the list will get larger ... Florida State was just in."

Who are Eugene's favorites?

Eugene: "I have a lot of them: Michigan, UCLA, USC, Miami, Penn State, Colorado ... let's see, there are more ... Washington, Tennessee, Oregon, Oregon State ... that's about it."

Coach Brown: "Eugene is open to everybody. He talks about Michigan, Ohio State, USC, Tennessee, UCLA, Penn State, Oregon State, Oregon, Washington, Florida State. He won't really know until he talks to the college coaches, sees the colleges' facilities, their programs, their support systems."

Eugene, is it true that you followed Michigan when you were a boy?

Eugene: "Yeah. I've just always liked the Wolverines for some reason. I was in 4th grade I think, and I just started rooting for Charles Woodson. I always said I wanted to go there."

Is Eugene going to any camps, spring or summer?

Coach Brown: "He isn't going to anyone's camp. And we stay away from Nike Camps. Our guys go from one sport to another, they are not in the weight room. Eugene is not in football shape right now, he's busy going to school now. Besides, we want colleges coaches to come in here and see our kids, to evaluate what they do on the field, not just the combine stats."

Eugene: "I'm sort of thinking about going to a USC camp this summer."

How are Eugene's academics?

Coach Brown: "He's got some work to do, but he should be fine."

What is Eugene's timetable for a decision?

Coach Brown: "One plan is to get this over early, so he can focus on school his senior year. But we'll probably go through the process."

Eugene: "It depends. I'll probably take all my visits, but if I'm really interested in a certain school, I might go ahead and decide."

One final comment from Coach Brown: "How is Zach (Kaufman) doing? Eugene went to Claremont (Kaufman's alma mater, and adjacent to Pomona) for two years."
