Jamarko Simmons is an accomplished athlete on both the gridiron and basketball court. Whether it was playing multiple positions on offense for the football team, or pouring in double digits from his forward spot for his city champion basketball team, this kid simply got the job done. I saw him in game action a few times last year and was thoroughly impressed with him as an athlete. From his wingback and receiver positions he was physical enough to get the yards after contact and fast enough to get around the corner. When I saw him on the basketball court versus Saginaw he went up for a thunderous dunk!
His recent performance at the Ann Arbor Nike Camp caught a few eyes. He was one of the most physical receivers present. H e also showed good speed and very nice hands. At one point he had beaten all of the DB's in his drill so badly that they started plucking a few from another group. I expect this player's recruitment to pick up some intensity very shortly.
What was your season like last year?
Team wise it wasn't that good, but as an individual I played really well. I had 65 catches for 615 yards and 7 touchdowns. I also had 40 carries for 350 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Can you talk about why you had to play both positions?
I played wide receiver at the beginning of the season, but then our running back got hurt. After that happened, my coach came up to me and said that I was the team's most versatile player. He said that he needed me to sacrifice for the team and move to runningback. He still let me play at wide receiver some during the games too.
Did you play any defense last year?
I didn't play much defense. I begged him to let me play safety, but he only put me in when it was third and long.
Do you have a top 5 schools at this point?
Right now my top 5 is Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Maryland, and Iowa.
Do you have any offers yet?
No, not yet.
Did you have a favorite school growing up?
Yeah, my favorite school has always been Michigan. I really liked Charles Woodson. Plus Tai Streets was my favorite receiver.
Had you been to Michigan at any point before the Nike Camp?
No. I had never visited before. That was my first time there.
Have you heard from Michigan yet?
They've been sending me a lot of stuff about coming to camp. I'll be camping there this summer. I've also heard from Fred Jackson. He said that I'm going to be hearing a lot more from them because they're very interested in me.
What were your Nike Camp Stats?
I was 6'2", 207lbs, ran a 4.58 forty, a 4.4 shuttle and had a 31" vertical.
Do you plan on camping anywhere else?
My dad stays in California, so I was thinking about going to USC's camp.
What position do you want to play in college?
I want to play wide receiver.
Do you see yourself waiting until close to signing day to make a decision or do you think you'll decide early?
I think I'll make an early decision so I can focus on school and get my priorities straight.
