MSU to Challenge UM for Walton?

Instate 2013 point guard prospect Derrick Walton out of Harper Woods is looking at schools and evaluating them at this time. Derrick talks to GBW about his recruitment - and a school that may be about to offer.

Derrick Walton has played a lot of games this AAU season, and most of the games he has played in he has been impressive. That is part of the reason some schools are showing him love; the other reason is his high basketball IQ.

"I try not to notice all the college coaches over in the corner," he told GoBlueWolverine. "I just try to focus on running our team and putting up wins.

Walton has been getting love from both of the instate schools -- he has noticed that quite often at games.

"Coach Beilein has been to the last nine games I have played, and Michigan State has seen me as well. Tuesday I am supposed to meet with the Michigan State coaches and have a meeting with them. I think they are going to offer me."

Derrick received a surprise phone call today from a recently committed player.

"I talked with Zak Irvin -- I was looking at the number and said, 'Let me answer the phone.' Zak and I have known each other for a while at AAU tournaments. As we were talking, he said I called to tell you I committed to Michigan, and he told me he would like for me to come and play with him. That was nice that he called to tell me that and to try and recruit me."

The Wolverines coaching staff really likes what Walton can do out on the floor, and they have made sure to mention that to him.

"When I talk with the Michigan staff they tell me how good of a player I can be for them. I really like the coaching staff -- Coach Alexander, Coach Meyer and Coach Jordan."

Yesterday Derrick went to the BCAM camp, and he had a good time. While there he was impressed with some of the participants there.

"Yeah I had a good time there. I was up there with my good friend Denzel Valentine, a Michigan State recruit, along with Matt Costello, another Michigan State recruit. Shane Battier spoke so it was very nice there."

As far as a decision for Derrick he is wide open about making one.

"I do have an idea of when I am going to make a decision," he said. (although he is keeping that on the low-low hush hush). "I just want to take my time and be sure of the choice I make."
