Stockton Edison WR Lavelle Hawkins

I spoke early Monday evening with Stockton, Calif., Edison WR Lavelle Hawkins (Stan. Nike stats: 5-11, 165 lbs., 4.41 in the 40, no shuttle). In our opinion Hawkins was the second best receiver at the recent Stanford Nike Camp. Here's what he had to say...

"I thought I should have been the MVP of the camp", said Hawkins, only half-joking. "But I guess they thought otherwise." He also told me that he hoped he could have caught more balls. After all, he was the only receiver who caught everything thrown at him.

When asked if Michigan had been in contact with him he told me, "Yeah, the Michigan coach was here at my school last week. Coach English."

What did Coach English tell you?

"He said they were interested in me and asked me which side of the ball I wanted to play on. I told him I didn't care, wherever I could play first."

What are you looking for in a school?

"I want to go where I can play the soonest. Playing time is the most important thing."

Do you have any offers?

"San Diego State and Cal have offered, that's it".

Do you have a top five list?

"No, not really, it's still real early and there is a lot about schools I don't know. I'm going to wait until I find out more about some of the different schools."

What do you like about Michigan?

"That's where Charles Woodson went, they put out a lot of top guys. I feel like I can play there at that level."

What do you think about playing in front of 111,000 people?

"Man, I'm pumped! I love to play in front of a lot of people, that would be great."

What do you want to do in college?

"I'm thinking about psychology."

What is your GPA?

"Right now it's around 2.3. After this semester it should be up to 2.5. I'm taking the ACT June 14th."

Are you going to attend any summer camps?

"Right now I'm going to attend the Miami camp. I haven't decided if I'm going anywhere else. We'll have to sit down and decide that later on."

Hawkins told me that former UM recruit Lynell Hamilton "is his cousin; I talk to him every day." He also told me that Coach Booker Guyton is no longer at Edison. Guyton was a big fan of Michigan so it will be interesting to see how things work out. At this time there is no replacement though Elliot Burke is the interim coach.

Below are some of the photos I took of Hawkins at the Stanford Nike Camp.
