Los Alamitos, Calif., DB Randy Estes

I spoke briefly last evening with standout DB Randy Estes. Estes is considered by many to be the top recruit on the West Coast, and so we wanted to find out where Michigan fit into his college plans.

Greg Biggins of Student Sports recently said this about Randy Estes (6-1, 180 lbs., 4.4 in the 40, 2.7 GPA, SAT Test June 7) from Los Alamitos, Calif. (Los Angeles area): "I still haven't seen a better defensive back anywhere."

Estes told me that he lists USC (note: generally considered his leader), Oklahoma, Oregon, Notre Dame, Miami, and Michigan among his top schools of interest, but that he has no favorite at this time. He has offers from schools in all the major conferences, and he said he isn't going to make a decision any time soon: "I want to visit places I haven't been before." When I asked him if he'd ever been to Michigan he said, "No, I've never been there but I want to go. I want to see the stadium." Estes doesn't have any visits set up at the moment, but has Michigan in his top five places to visit.

He told me, "I like Michigan, I love their football and how they always play for a title. They have a good program. Playing in front of 100,000 people would be something. I don't have any problem leaving California."

We'd spoken with Estes briefly at the NorCal Nike Camp at Stanford where he informed us that Michigan has also offered him. Estes didn't run the 40 or the shuttle the camp but did have a 35-inch vertical jump and did 15 reps on the bench (185 lbs.).

We had to cut our chat short but I hope to have more on this outstanding defensive back in the near future. Spring practice for Los Alamitos began on Monday.
