NC DB Attracts U-M at V-Tech Nike

The story of North Carolina defensive back Jamar Adams is a testament to the value of the Nike Camps: a stellar performance can make a sleeper into a sensation overnight. Adams' story is full of interesting U-M-related twists.

The twists for Jamar Adams from Matthews, N.Car, David W Butler High School: (1) his 40 time was poor and STILL his post-Nike stock rose dramatically. (2) U-M hadn't been recruiting him even though he's been a U-M Camper; (3) the 'offer thing' -- did he get one?

I talked to Adams Thurs. evening.

Michigan was at your school this week?

"Yes, Coach Campbell came in on Monday."

He saw you at Virginia Tech Nike?

"Yes sir. He and the defensive coordinator Jim Herrmann were both there and watched me. I had not heard from Michigan before that, nothing in the mail or anything."

What were your Nike stats?

"I measured 6-2 1/2 and 193 lbs. I ran a 4.13 sec. shuttle and had a 33.2 inch vertical jump, but by the time I ran the 40 it had been raining for a while and the grass was wet and slippery. I ran a 4.7. I did well in the position drills though."

So, what happened on Monday?

"Well, Coach Campbell came by my classroom. He just said hi and that me wanted he to come to Michigan. He told my coaches that Michigan was going to offer me a scholarship. Then Coach Campbell called me on the phone that same night. He said they wanted to get me up there for camp and for an official visit."

Are you going to come to the Michigan camp?

"Yes, I'm planning on coming up to camp at Michigan for a couple days. I'd actually camped there before, two years ago. My coaches go up there and coach at the Michigan every summer, and they always bring a few kids with them. I went the summer before my sophomore year. I actually got something from Michigan only once, a questionaire right after the camp, asking me how I liked the camp and inviting me back again."

Who are your favorites?

"Well, I'm really not ready to narrow it down. Colleges are stepping up their recruiting of me now. But Michigan is right up there as one of my two favorites --with Florida State, I've always loved them. But I'm considering Michigan, Florida State, Miami, NC-State, Virginia Tech, Virginia ... the list is growing."

What about scholarship offers?

"Virginia Tech coaches were supposed to offer me right after camp ... they thought I was coming back to visit on Sunday, but I thought they wanted me to come over right when the camp ended, so I went over there and there was no one there. When the Penn State coach was at my school he told me he just has to clear it with the head coach. And a lot of schools say they will offer me at their summer camp."

Schools are recruiting you as a safety?

"Interesting you should ask that. Coach Campbell actually says Michigan will try me at corner first."

How about academics?

"My GPA is 3.2, and I have a 940 SAT."
