U-M Visits Top Miss. Quarterback

Yesterday I got an email from an assistant coach at Baldwyn (MS) High School. The top quarterback in the state got a Michigan visit at his school this week.

If you recall, on Monday I wrote about the Auburn Nike Camp quarterbacks, saying: "... the top two performers overall were probably in the 'shorter group', Ga.'s Alex Mortenson (son of ESPN's Cris) and Miss.'s Blake Barnes."

Barnes, from Baldwyn High School in the northeast corner of Miss., looked 6-2 to me, and maybe 190-200 lbs., and in the passing drills he was quick and strong-armed. The quarterbacks there were really put through their paces in the QB drills, and by the end only the balls thrown by Barnes and Mortenson still had their 'full zip'. Someone asked me this week if Barnes reminded me of Griese: my response was, "Blake is quicker than Griese and has a better arm at the same stage too."

Word definitely got around about Barnes, because Wednesday I was surprised to get this email from a Baldwyn assistant:

"Michigan Assistant Coach Jackson was by Baldwyn (MS) High School Tuesday to see quarterback Blake Barnes. They had a good chat. Blake seemed very interested in Michigan after visiting with Coach Jackson."

"Blake is a very humble young man. He doesn't talk a lot about his recruitment, it's almost like pulling teeth to get him to talk. However he did talk about his visit with Coach Jackson."

Barnes is no 'sleeper' in the Deep South: as a junior he threw for over 2,500 yards and 37 touchdowns, and he is Tom Lemming's #15 quarterback.
