I talked this afternoon to the mother of Max Martin (Planned 2003 U-M Camper, 6-2, 210 lbs., 4.5 in the 40, 305-lb. bench press, 2.5 GPA/24 ACT) from Madison, Ala., Bob Jones (in the Huntsville area), and then to Max himself as he and his brother were in their car driving back down to Alabama from Ann Arbor.
Hi Max! Whacha been doing lately?
(Chucking) "I just came off an unofficial visit to Michigan. I really liked what I saw, and I committed to the Wolverines!"
"I'd been wanting to do it. I got there yesterday afternoon. I talked to Coach Carr right away, and committed on the spot! I talked to him again this morning. I just really like what he and Coach Jackson have to say."
What do they have to say?
"They said they are looking for me to get on the field and contribute right away. They said I'll get the opportunity to play as a freshman. Whatever the opportunity is at Michigan -- I have no problem going in there and competing and earning my way onto the field. I actually feel I have something to prove. I always take the attitude that I'm the best player on the field, but most people haven't found that out yet. I gotta get others to find that out!"
Mrs. Martin: "It's a life-long dream of his; he's always favored Michigan. And we just moved down here to Alabama two years ago, from Chicago. My family lives up there."
Max: "Michigan been my favorite school since I was six or seven. I don't know why really. I've just followed them ever since I've followed football. They are just such a successful program. Then the '97 season with Woodson and the National Championship -- that really solidified them at the top spot, as the place I want to go. Still, this spring I looked at other schools deeply, and I kept waiting for another school to catch my eye. But none did -- I know I made the right decision. Michigan is the best of both worlds, academically and athletically."
Are you still going up to the Michigan Camp?
"Hmmm. I don't know. I haven't thought about that now. We'll just have to see."
Note: Max will actually remind people of the A-Train, although he bit looks to me to be an inch taller and a little faster. But like Anthony Thomas, he can overpower people, he can get to the outside as well, and he can catch the ball on the run. I have heard people 'in the know' say, "He reminds people of Eric Dickerson." The same people who call him: "The Best High School Big Back in America."
