Does Mbakagu Have a U-M Offer?

I spoke with Hayward, Calif defensive lineman Phillip Mbakagu late Monday night. I wanted to find out if the Michigan coaches had extended a scholarship offer to the talented player.

Mbakagu (Nike Camp numbers - 6-2, 260, 5.00 40, 32 reps, 4.58 shuttle) wasn't home when I first called Monday evening. When I asked his step-mother whether or not Phillip had an offer from Michigan, her reply was, "No, Phillip doesn't have an athletic scholarship offer from Michigan." Then she told me I could call and talk to Phillip later on that night.

When Mbakagu answered the phone he excitedly said, "I just won Defensive Player of the Year for the North Coast Section." Then he wanted to know, "How do I get to play in the U.S. Army game, and the CaliFlorida Bowl game? I want to play in both." This young man is ready to put the pads on and get down to business. I wanted to get down to business myself, so after congratulating him I asked:

Do you have an offer from U-M?

"Coach English called and told me they wanted me, and they were going to evaluate some film and send me an offer in the mail."

What other schools have offered?

"Cal, LSU, Washington, Arizona State, Colorado, Oklahoma, and Oregon."

What are your camp plans for the summer?

"I may just go to the Cal Camp since it's right here near my home. I am going to the Dublin Defensive End Camp in July, the 14th and 15th, right on my birthday (14th). I'm also going to concentrate on speed training this summer. I'll be working with a speed coach, I'm not sure which one yet. Plus my school has what's called a 'HARD Camp', I'm not sure what the letters mean."

When do you think you'll make a decision?

"It will be later, I want to take all my trips first and get the full experience." Mabakagu had told me in an earlier interview that he wanted to visit schools in every corner of the country, since he's never been out of California.

Do you have any visits set?

"Not yet, but I am going to take a couple of unofficial visits, one to Cal, and maybe to USC and UCLA."
