Bakich's Baseball Review (Week 13)

Michigan baseball coach Eric Bakich sat down with Sam Webb on Sports Talk 1050 WTKA this week to review his team's 4-1 showing over the 13th week of action. The Wolverines beat Central Michigan, then took their series with Northwestern 2-1, before routing Eastern Michigan in mid-week action.

The University of Michigan baseball team ends the 2015 regular season with a three-game set against No. 13 Oklahoma State at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. The games on Thursday (May 14) and Friday (May 15) will start at 6 p.m. The series concludes on Saturday afternoon (May 16) with a noon start. Thursday and Friday's games will be streamed on BTN Plus. Saturday's game will be televised on the Big Ten Network with Andy Masur and Jack Dahm on the call. Saturday's game also is Senior Day at Fisher Stadium, as U-M will honor its seven seniors before the game. Michigan is coming off a 17-2 win over Eastern Michigan on May 12.

BIVENS GOES FOR FIVE IN NORTHWESTERN WIN -- Freshman Jake Bivens was a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate with three runs scored and three RBI in the 19-1 win over Northwestern on May 10. Bivens set career highs for hits, RBI and runs scored in the win over the Wildcats. His two-run double in the sixth inning was part of a nine-run frame for the Maize and Blue. The Battle Creek, Michigan, native was 8-for-12 at the plate in the Northwestern series and carries a 11-game hitting streak into Thursday's contest. After that performance, Bivens was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the second time this year.

SCOUTING OKLAHOMA STATE -- The Cowboys (32-16) are coming off an 11-2 win over Dallas Baptist on Tuesday night (May 12). Donnie Walton scored three runs and had a pair of hits while Remey Reed earned the win on the mound, striking out two in three innings of relief. Corey Hassel leads OSU with a .316 batting average while Ryan Sluder has 13 doubles and six home runs. On the mound, Michael Freeman is 8-2 with a 1.16 ERA and 77 strikeouts.

SERIES VS. OKLAHOMA STATE -- This will be the first meeting on the diamond between the two teams. Michigan will face a Big 12 team in the final weekend of the regular season for the second straight year. U-M faced Kansas in Ann Arbor on May 17-18, 2014, with the two teams splitting the two-game series.

WOLVERINES HONOR SENIORS ON SATURDAY -- Michigan will honor its seven seniors on Saturday against Oklahoma State. Donnie Eaton, Jackson Glines, Eric Jacobson, Kyle Jusick, Matt Ogden, Kendall Patrick and Kevin White will play their final game at the Wilpon Complex. Eaton and Ogden have combined for 18 wins on the mound, while Glines, Jacobson, Jusick, Patrick and White have a combined for 249 RBI and 119 extra bases.

BENEDETTI MOVES UP NCAA RANKINGS -- Sophomore Carmen Benedetti belted his 23rd double of the season in the 17-2 win over Eastern Michigan on May 12. That mark leads the Big Ten and is just six away from the NCAA best (Nick Lynch of UC Davis has 29). He also is three doubles away from tying Michigan's single-season mark of 26, which was set by Bryan Besco in the 2007 season. Benedetti currently is tied for fifth place with Jason Christian on the single-season list. The sophomore also leads the Big Ten and is third in the NCAA with 63 RBI. He is only five RBI behind the NCAA leader, Matt Beaty of Belmont.
