Dale Thompson (6'4", 250, 4.7, 2.7 GPA, June 7 SAT) is considered the top tight end prospect in Calif. He's also number two on the west coast, so I wanted to find out what his future plans were, and if they included Michigan. Thompson broke his hand in his second game last seaon, and played the rest of the year on the offensive line. He ended up with only 6 catches and 3 TD's. How did the injury effect his recruitment as a tight end?
"It actually helped with my blocking. I think I became a better blocker when I played on the line. I'm about even as far as being a blocking tight end and a catching end."
What schools have been in contact with you?
"All the Pac 10 schools, a few Big 12 schools, Michigan and Miami."
What are your top five schools at the moment?
"I really don't have any favorites. I'm getting a lot more attention than I expected so I want to check everything out and see what I like."
Do you have any offers?
"All the Pac 10 schools except for Stanford, Colorado, Utah, Nebraska, and Michigan. I talked to coach Carr on the phone and he gave me the offer. Coach (Ron) English is my recruiter from Michigan. "
Are you being recruited primarily as a tight end?
"Yes, I play a little defensive end, but I want to play offense in college, so that's what everyone is recruiting me to play."
What are you looking for in a school?
"I want a good school with good academics. Michigan has always had a good football team and I like that. I want to major in Sports Medicine so I'll be looking for a school that is good in that area. I don't have any problems leaving California so I'll be looking at schools all over."
Do you have any visits set up?
No, not any set up. I talked to Coach English and he said something about going back to Michigan during the second or third week of September, but nothing is solid yet. I'll probably be taking unofficial visits to USC and UCLA since they are right here where I live."
What are your plans for summer?
I'm not sure if I'm going to attend any camps. At my high school we workout 4 days a week with runnung and weight lifting for two hours."
How involved will your family be in your decision?
"My family will come with me when I make my trips, but the final decision is mine. I'd like to make a decision about mid-season after I've taken a couple of visits."
So there are two more names to add to the list of California recruits with offers from Michigan. Spring practice for Thompson ended last week so I won't get a chance to visit him on campus until Fall. You can bet I'll be there to watch this talented player injury free.
