CA DE Mathis eyes Michigan for official visit

Southern California DE/OLB Joe Mathis received an offer from Michigan last week and currently sits on 15 total offers. Mathis discusses with GBW his familiarity with Michigan, what officials he plans to take, and whether or not any schools are starting to emerge.

At 6'4, 250 pounds, Upland high school's Joe Mathis is a versatile pass rusher off the edge and had an impressive junior season in California.

As a junior, "I had 80 tackles with 8 sacks, 2 forced fumbles and 3 carries for 50 yards and 1 touchdown," Mathis told GoBlueWolverine.

Mathis played stand-up linebacker and also put his hand on the ground this past fall, something college coaches are very fond of.

"In the 3-4 scheme I could play a stand-up and defensive end, so they said they like me at stand-up," said Mathis.

Michigan's versatility in the front seven plays right into the hand's of a talent such as Mathis and the wolverines came calling with an offer.

"I checked my email Wednesday so that's when I found out I got offered," said Mathis. "We talked a couple times and then he (Coach Ferrigno) emailed me, wanting to see my transcript, and then he was like, ‘Okay, also the University of Michigan wants to offer you a scholarship'."

Michigan stayed in regular contact with Mathis and even made it out to see him during the winter.

"We talked a couple of times, he (Coach Ferrigno) came to see me during the winter," said Mathis. "He's a nice guy, we just talked, I told him about myself and he told me about himself so it was like that."

Although Mathis hasn't been to Michigan himself, he's heard and seen his fair share about the Wolverines.

"Big, big football school," said Mathis laughing. "Biggest stadium pretty much ever. I've seen a lot of movies with Michigan in it and I've heard a lot of stories about Michigan—like they have the most wins ever."

Mathis plans to camp at in-state schools in California and also Oklahoma but hasn't set up any other spring or summer visits. Instead Mathis already has some official visits in mind.

"I plan on taking an official visit to Michigan," said Mathis. "Nebraska, Oklahoma, I don't know about the other schools, but those three I know for sure I'm going to take an official to."

Once Mathis actually sets foot on some of these campuses, his eyes will be fixated on some very specific things.

"I'm going to be looking at how people act on campus, are they nice, are they snobby like that," said Mathis. "I'm a big workout freak so I'm going to look at the weight room, how they run the weight room … academics, see the business program and just see how the coaches do in game situations, how they coach and stuff."

With official visits already in mind are there any school's beginning to emerge in these sweepstakes?

"Nebraska is, Oklahoma and then USC," said Mathis. "Michigan just offered but you know, I do like Michigan I just need to go see the school because what I've heard I like Michigan a lot, I just need to see the school, see how it is there."
