Sam Webb: Tell me how things went for you on the football field last year.
Bentley Spain: “Well, we were 2-8 so we didn’t have the best year and we didn’t make the playoffs, but I think we’re getting better, and I had a pretty good season. I didn’t give up any sacks and I had about 60 pancakes.”
Sam Webb: What was the biggest difference, the biggest improvement, in Bentley Spain from the start of the season to the end of the season?
Bentley Spain: “I think I just got nastier and I think I blocked much better.”
Sam Webb: What’s your height, your weight, and your 40 time?
Bentley Spain: “I am 6’6”, 285-lbs, and my 40 time is 5.3.”
Sam Webb: As far as your position, are you purely a tackle? What position are you being recruited for?
Bentley Spain: “I’m being mainly recruited for tackle, but I mean, I can play all five positions on the line.”
Sam Webb: So for people who haven’t seen you play, kind of break down your game for me.
Bentley Spain: “Well I think, you know, like I said, I got better. I have a mean streak, and I finish blocks, always play to the whistle, and I think I use my hands very well, and I have good feet, and I take very good back steps, I think, which helps me a lot on pass blocking.”
Sam Webb: Ok. So at this point it’s clear that even though it’s early for you, recruiting is going very well. Do you have an idea off the top of your head how many scholarship offers you have?
Sam Webb: So when exactly did Michigan sort of enter the picture? And how did you receive word of that scholarship offer?
Bentley Spain: “Well, they entered the picture in January this year. Coach Montgomery, who’s my area recruiter here, came to my school. Then when I was on spring break, I was on the phone with them, and that’s when the offer was made.”
Sam Webb: Were you at all familiar with Michigan before that, or did you just start becoming familiar with Michigan once they started recruiting you?
Bentley Spain: “I was familiar with them. I actually was born in Indianapolis and moved here when I was three, but my parents went to school in the Big Ten, and are Big Ten fans. I knew about them, and I’ve watched a couple of their games, but I wasn’t intently following them.”
Sam Webb: Obviously grew up in ACC country. Did you grow up a fan of any particular school? North Carolina or North Carolina State, or anything like that?
Bentley Spain: “I didn’t really. Both my parents went to Indiana, so the football there is not quite the best. I just enjoy most games.”
Sam Webb: So pretend for a second that you’re getting ready to sit down and make your decision… what are going to be the most significant factors in that choice?
Bentley Spain: “Well, I want to go somewhere where I can win, somewhere that has great tradition, and somewhere that I’d considered going if I wasn’t going to play football. “
Sam Webb: Do you know what you want to major in at this point?
Bentley Spain: “I’m not really sure. Maybe business, maybe, you know, pre-med or something – I just don’t even know.”
Sam Webb: What about distance from home? Is distance from home going to be a factor for you?
Bentley Spain: “I think if it’s the right place, it’s the right place… however far that is. If it’s the right place, I’m willing to go.”
Sam Webb: Now as far as visits are concerned, what campuses have you been to already?
Bentley Spain: “Well, I’ve visited North Carolina, South Carolina, and Clemson.”
Sam Webb: Do you have any plans on possibly visiting Michigan?
Bentley Spain: “Well, I’m planning on coming out in early June, but I don’t have anything set in stone yet.”
Sam Webb: What about timeline? Have you sat down with your parents and talked about when you might like to make a decision?
Bentley Spain: “Well, I might try to make a decision sometime around this time next year, but I don’t want to rush anything. I don’t want to be one of those guys that de-commits. I want to make the right decision for me. If it’s not the right time, it’s not the right time. I’m just going to play it by ear.”
Sam Webb: At this very early point in your recruitment have any schools started to stand out?
Bentley Spain: “Well, you know, I’m very interested in all the schools that have offered me, and I don’t want to pick any favorites yet.”
Sam Webb: Last but not least, just tell me very generally what you know about Michigan at this point?
Bentley Spain: “I think, they’re moving toward a pro-style offense a lot, which I think is very good for me. That’s the kind of offense that I’d like to play in, ideally. I love what they’re doing up there. I think they’re really on the rise and they had a great season last year. I think I just need to keep developing relationships with all the coaches and get up there for a visit.”
