Here is the June 28 update of our "Best Guess <!--Default For Michigan is to ignore-->Michigan Recruiting Class" – the offensive and defensive linemen, and tight ends.

It is quite possible that Michigan may want four offensive and four defensive linemen for the 2003/04 class, and maybe even a fifth on one side of the ball or the other. And our tight end list is included as well. June 28, 2003

Offensive Linemen

- Michigan Commitment #6: Alex Mitchell (2003 U-M Camper, U-M Nike stats: 6-6, 317 lbs., 5.69 in the 40, 24 bench press reps., 5.09 sec. shuttle, 20.0 inch vertical) from Bay City, Mich., Central. His dad emailed us: "Yes Michigan did offer Alex, and he committed during summer football camp (on Wed., June 18). He will be a Wolverine! He is happy, and the recruiting process is over for us. GO BLUE!" Mitchell attended numerous football games, and the OSU basketball game junior day.

- Michigan commitment #7: Grant DeBenedictis (2003 and 2002 U-M Camper, 6-4, 270 pounds) from Boca Raton, Fla., St. Andrews Prep. He was offered, and committed, at the 2003 U-M Camp – on Wed., June 18.

- Jeremy Ciulla (6-5 1/2, 279 lbs., 5.0 in the 40, 325 lb. bench press, 3.6 GPA/1100 SAT) from Kennesaw Mountain, Ga. He has a U-M OFFER. He made early June visits to U-M, Notre Dame, Georgia and Stanford, and in mid-June told us, "My top 3 are probably Michigan, Georgia, and Stanford … I'll decide by the end of July."

- Brett Gallimore (6-5, 290 lbs., 5.1 in the 40, 300-lb.bench press, 2.6 GPA) from Riverside, Mo., Park Hill South (Kansas City area). He attended a U-M spring practice and got a scholarship OFFER. He will visit U-M again in July. Michigan is in his top 2-3.

- Jeff Byers (6-4, 272 lbs., 4.8 in the 40, 385-lb. bench press, 30-inch vertical jump, 4.0 GPA) from Fort Collins, Col., Loveland. On June 27 his mom told us, "He's there right now. They (Jeff and his father) visited Notre Dame yesterday. They will stay with Jeff's sister and family in Ann Arbor tonight, and then go on to Ohio State tomorrow. By the way, I have family in Michigan too -- my sister lives in Frankenmuth." He may be ranked as the top offensive lineman nationally in the class of 2004 by TheInsiders.com. He throws the shot put 53 feet and the javelin 159. He also plays center for his basketball team. He is from Iowa originally, and reportedly plans to visit U-M, OSU and Notre Dame this summer. He has a U-M OFFER.

- Kyle Mitchum (2003 U-M Camper, 6-5, 265 lbs., 5.0 in the 40) from Erie, Pa., McDonald. He attended the first day of the U-M Camp, and was OFFERed. He'll narrow his list to a top five by the end of July. He is MaxEmfingerRecruiting.com's #1 OT.

- Josh Winchell (Aub. Nike stats: 6-3 1/2, 290 lbs. … 5.0 in the 40, 365 lb. bench press, 2.5 GPA) from Southaven, Miss. Michigan was in his school in May and is his FAVORITE.

- Drew Miller (Fla. Nike stats: 6-4, 290 lbs., 5.3 in the 40, 4.8 sec. shuttle, 24-inch vertical jump, 27 bench press reps.) from Sarasota, Fla., Riverview. In late May he told us, "Coach Campbell came to the school. Then that night he called me and OFFERed me a scholarship." He also lists Florida (some say his favorite), Miami, FSU, OSU and Tennessee. He was one of the top two O-Linemen at the Fla. Nike camp. Sarasora Riverview is David Baas' school, but it'll be hard to get Miller out of Florida.

- Brandon Braxton (6-7, 300 lbs., 5.1 in the 40, 3.75 GPA) from Youngstown, Oh., Ursuline. He attended the OSU basketball junior day. Michigan has reportedly OFFERed him a scholarship. He may attend the U-M Nike Camp. He is one of MaxEmfingerRecruiting.com's top four offensive tackles.

- Gerald Cadogan (6-6, 310 lbs., 5.1 in the 40, 370 lb. bench press, 3.8 GPA/18 ACT) from Portsmith, Oh. He plans to visit U-M in July.

- Courtney Abbott (6-9, 340 lbs., 5.2 in the 40) from Atlanta, Ga., Westlake. There are reports that he has a U-M offer.

- Shane Canterbury (2003 U-M Camper, 6-7, 345 lbs.) from Pigeon Forge, Tenn.

- Jason Bosley (2003 U-M camper, 6-4 and 280 lbs., 5.35 in the 40, 3.3+ GPA/23 ACT) from Huntsville, Ala., Grissom. Bosley finished 4th in the State Wrestling Meet this past winter.

- Jeray Chatham (6-4, 265 lbs., 4.9 in the 40, 375-lb. bench press) from Spring-Westfield, Texas. Michigan has reportedly OFFERed him a scholarship, and as of mid-May he still plans to attend the 2003 U-M camp. In mid-March his coach told us, "Coach (Fred) Jackson visited here this January. And then Jeray called and talked briefly to Coach Carr." We visited with him in early June at Tom Lemming's photo shoot, where we asked him about camping: "I want to go -- I'm planning to go." He is one of MaxEmfingerRecruiting.com's top thirteen offensive tackles.

Defensive Linemen

- Michigan commitment #3 Chris Rogers (2003 U-M Camper, 6-3, 240 lbs., 4.7 40, 340-lb. bench press, 3.3 GPA/950 SAT) from Wexford, Pa., North Allegheny (in western Pa.). He committed on the first day of the Michigan Camp. As a junior he recorded 75 tackles, 12 tackles-for-loss and eight sacks. He attended the OSU basketball game Junior Day, and was OFFERED there.

- Michigan Commitment #5 Will Johnson (2003 U-M Camper, U-M Nike stats: 6-4.5, 278 lbs, 5.15 in the 40 {4.71 electronic at the U-M Camp}, 30 bench press reps., 27.9 inch vertical, 4.56 sec. Shuttle … 425 lb. bench press 3.8 GPA/qualified) from Lake Orion, Mich. He was offered at the U-M Camp, and went home and committed to Michigan the next day (Wed., June 18). Johnson could end up on the D-line or O-line.

- Alan Branch (2003 U-M Camper, 6-6, 300 lbs., 5.2 in the 40, 4.65 in the shuttle, 2.5 GPA/17 ACT) from Albuquerque, New Mexico, Cibola. He attended the U-M Camp for the whole week but didn't commit; Texas A&M may provide competition. He attended the US Army Combine in January. His parents are from Detroit, and his mom went to U-M for a year. He has a U-M OFFER.

- Ryan Baker (2003 U-M Camper, 6-5, 235 lbs., 4.9 in the 40, 3.5 GPA) from Indianapolis, Ind., Bishop Chatard. In late May his father told us, "He has very sincere interest in Michigan. In fact, Michigan was close to getting a commitment in the spring." He has an early U-M OFFER. As a junior tight end last year he had 13 receptions for 251 yards (19.31 yards per carry); as a defensive end he had 42 solo tackles and 26 assisted tackles (for 68 total), 17 tackles for loss and nine sacks. He is TheInsiders' Chris Pool's #3 Midwest prospect.

- Nick Hayden (Possible summer U-M visit, 6-5, 270 lbs., 4.8 in the 40, 320-lb. bench press, 28-inch vertical jump, 3.0 GPA) from Hartland, Wis., Arrowhead. His junior season he had approx. twenty sacks, and approx. ten tackles a game. He has a Michigan OFFER. In mid-March he told us, "My mom and dad and I went for a visit for the OSU basketball game. We had a meeting Coach Carr. They had seen my tapes and Coach Carr offered me a scholarship." He also reportedly attended a spring practice at Michigan." He plans to make a summer decision. Wisconsin is under consideration, as well as Notre Dame, Iowa and others.

- Dwayne Hendricks (Planned Oct. 25 visit, PSU Nike stats: 6-4, 250 lbs., 4.8 in the 40, 30 inch vertical jump … 3.0 GPA/900 SAT) from Milville, New Jersey. He got a U-M visit and phone call in May. He was a spring practice visitor, and U-M has OFFERED him. At the PSU Nike Camp he told me, He told us, "My favorites right now are the three schools that have offered me: in order, Michigan, Iowa and Virginia." But as far as summer camps, he said he planned to attend: "Notre Dame's, and Georgia Tech's." He plans to visit U-M again Oct. 25 for the Purdue game. As a junior he made 65 tackles and three sacks.

- Michael Massey (2003 U-M Camper, 6-5, 235 lbs., 4.7 in the 40, 225-lb. bench press, 2.5 GPA) from Cleveland St. Ignatius. He's the brother of Wolverine Pat Massey. As with Pat, OSU and Notre Dame look to be the main competition. He attended the final Michigan Spring Scrimmage. Mike attended the Purdue basketball game, and the Wis. game last fall. He had injury problems his junior season, but made 81 tackles and nine sacks. Massey is a consensus top-ten Ohio junior, and one of MaxEmfingerRecruiting.com's top seven defensive ends. As a tight end, Massey made 15 receptions for 154 yards and a touchdown; as a DE 9 sacks, 81 tackles, and close to 20 quarterback hurries.

- Calais Campbell (6-8, 230 lbs., 4.8 in the 40, 3.1 GPA/17 ACT) from Denver, Col., South. Michigan visited his school in May and has an OFFER waiting for him when he calls. As a junior he made 106 tackles and 19 sacks.

- DE Thomas Herring (6-6, 290 lbs., 5.06 in the 40, 3.2 GPA, June 7 test) from Los Angeles Fremont. He has a U-M OFFER and Michigan is in his summer top seven. Note: he lives near USC and the Trojans are considered the leader.

- Jeff Schweiger (Nike Camp stats: 6-4, 240 lbs., 4.56 in the 40, 4.11 in the shuttle, 31 bench press reps, 30.9 inch vertical ... 3.0 GPA) from San Jose, Calif., Valley Christian. He was the top defensive player at the Stan. Nike Camp, after which he told us U-M was in his top five, but Notre Dame and USC lead. Michigan visited him in May and OFFERed him. As a junior he made 138 tackles, 13 sacks, and ten tackles for loss.

- Dale Thompson (6-4, 250 lbs., 4.7 in the 40, 2.7 GPA, June 7 SAT) from Corona, Calif. U-M has OFFERed him. He has not narrowed his list yet.

- Zac Miller Phoenix (6-5, 240 lbs., 4.0 GPA) from Desert Vista, Ariz. He is considered perhaps the top tight end in the USA. U-M is reportedly in his top six even though they have just started recruiting him in June. Miami and ASU lead however.
