Sam Webb: Tell me how things went for you on the football field last year?
Mason Cole: ”We started off rough. We went 2-3 in the first five games and then we won five straight. Then we lost in the third round of the playoffs to Plant high school in overtime. We were big under dogs and we lost in overtime. We finished 9-4.”
Sam Webb: Let’s talk about you individually. Tell me about your game a little bit.
Mason Cole: “I like to be nasty on the field. I think that’s a big part of why coaches like me. And I think they like that I hustle a lot. I’m always blocking down field and always the first one back in the huddle.”
Sam Webb: So what’s your height weight, and forty time?
Mason Cole: “6-5, 270, and 5.3.”
Sam Webb: Is there a player in college or the pros that we can compare you to?
Mason Cole: “I’ve always looked up to Michael Oher.”
Sam Webb: Can you recall off the top of your head how many scholarship offers you have?
Sam Webb: So what schools have you visited thus far?
Mason Cole: “I went to a FSU junior day and to USF. WE go to USF team camp every year. So I am always on campus and stuff. I am going to Clemson’s camp this summer. And I am going up on the campus of the University of South Carolina.”
Sam Webb: Give me an idea about your familiarity with Michigan. Did you know much about them before the offered you a scholarship?
Mason Cole: “I lived in Chicago until I was eight. That’s not too far from Michigan. I’ve watched them a little bit and I kind of grew up as a Big Ten fan. I am looking into Michigan more and more. I am planning to get up there sometime this summer. Sometime maybe in June possibly. If not then, in early August go up on campus and see everything.”
Sam Webb: Was there a particular school in the Big Ten that you grew up a fan of?
Mason Cole: “Not really. I just always liked how the conference played. My cousin is a big Michigan fan. He was all excited when he heard I got an offer from them. ”
Sam Webb: Which Michigan coaches are you talking to?
Mason Cole: “I stay in touch with Coach Montgomery the defensive line coach. He said they are excited to pursue me. They want to make sure they get me up this summer on the campus and see everything. They would love to have me. “
Sam Webb: What would you say you like about Michigan at this point, and would like to find out?
Mason Cole: “I like the fact that they have a lot of history in their school. And their football program has always been a winning program. I would like to see the background… like all the facilities, the coaching staff, and how the players like the school and everything.”
Sam Webb: I know you’re originally from the Midwest, but you’re in Florida now. Is distance from home going to be a factor?
Mason Cole: “Not really, cause if I go to a big school (up north) my parents are still going to be up there for all my games and everything. So it really doesn’t matter to me.”
Sam Webb: So you think you’d be able to adjust to a little bit colder weather?
Mason Cole: “You know, I think I can tough it out. (Laughter)”
Sam Webb: When was the last time you saw snow?
Mason Cole: “Christmas. (Laughter)”
Sam Webb: Let’s pretend for a second that you’re getting ready to pick your school. What are going to be the biggest factors in that choice?
Mason Cole: “How much the community is into the school and the football program. And the school itself… like the academics and the history of the school, and of course the football program.”
Sam Webb: What about style of offense? Some guys want to play in a pro-style… some guys want to play in a spread. Do you have a preference?
Mason Cole: “Not really, cause coaching staffs can change anytime. So it is not really that big of deal.
Sam Webb: What about timeline? At what point do you think you’re going to be ready to sit down and make a decision?
Mason Cole: “I talked to my parents before and I kind of said that whenever I fall in love with a school, that’s when I am going to decide that is the school that I am going to go to. It can be anytime really. “
Sam Webb: Do you have a favorite or a top group of schools?
Mason Cole: “I don’t have a favorite school right now, and I don’t have a top group… just kind of an area. I would either like to play in the Big Ten or in the south east.”
