"I've been in contact with Coach Mattison throughout the past couple of months just trying to stay up to date," Byrne told GoBlueWolverine. "Because of my schedule I really can't go see a game at Michigan, but I'm just keeping in contact as best as I can."
Although the Wolverines have yet to offer Byrne, the Michigan coaches have given every indication a scholarship can be expected down the line.
"Michigan said they're just going to continue to recruit me hard and I'm at the top of their board right now," said Byrne. "I think when they're ready to offer they will."
Two schools that have offered Byrne make up two-thirds of the Wolverines main rivals, and also two-thirds of the young mans current top schools.
"I'm just keeping all of my options open but right now I'd say my top three are Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame," said Byrne. "No particular order but we'll see."
One opportunity the Irish or Wolverines can improve their standing with Byrne will be the upcoming non-conference clash on September 22nd in South Bend.
"Right now my only plans are to go up to Notre Dame to watch them play Michigan," said Byrne. "I'm really interested to see how that turns out."
Byrne has been held out the past two weeks as a precautionary measure as he recovers from a minor knee injury suffered in camp. After being a back up on varsity during the 2011 season, until the playoffs, Byrne can't wait to get back on the field and show what he can do.
As far as what Byrnes is hoping to see out of the schools in hot pursuit of his talents, the 6'4, 285 pounder knows exactly what he's looking for.
"Coaching staff and academics are going to be the biggest things for me," said Byrne. "St. Ignatius is a great school, and they've really taught me the benefits of a great education. Then coaching staff, I don't know everything there is to know, I need to learn, so that's what I'm looking for."
As far as when that decision could be made, Byrne will still have some evaluating to do come spring.
"After the season I'll probably go check out a few more spring games," said Byrne. "Before the season next year I'm definitely going to make a decision."
