Big Arizona Lineman Allen Smith

Several stories have been floating around lately stating Tempe, AZ Corona del Sol lineman Allen Smith has a U-M offer. Is this, in fact, true? Sunday night I talked to the big lineman himself to find out.

Allen Smith (6-5, 325 lbs., 3.6 GPA, 1300 SAT) has many ties to hometown school Arizona State. His mother is a professor of Sociology there, he is friends with current and former players, and lives not far from the campus. Given this the talented OL is not averse to leaving Arizona, "No, I don't have a problem leaving the state." He already has a brother that graduated from Dartmouth, and one at Virginia. Smith has offers from UCLA, Stanford, Notre Dame, Washington, Wyoming, Northwestern, Oregon, and Arizona State. He originally became interested in Michigan because a family friend wouldn't stop talking about the Wolverines: "We have a close family friend that went to Oregon State but is a huge Michigan fan. All she did was talk about how great Michigan is."

So, is there an offer from Michigan?

"No, I don't have an offer from Michigan at this time. I talked to Coach Ron English back in May and he said they really liked me, but there hasn't been an offer yet."

With mom a college professor, and siblings attending other prestigous academic institutions, the combination of athletic and academic exellence is a big attraction to Smith. "My mom really likes the fact that Michigan has good academics for their football players. It's a great school." Smith went on, "Of the schools that haven't offered yet I'd say Michigan is my number one. I don't really have a list of favorites anyway as I want to look around and take my time. I don't have any visits set but Michigan is gauranteed a visit if they decide to offer."

"With the dead period now I haven't heard from Coach English since May, but I think I'll give him a call next week and see where I stand with Michigan."

As far as when he'll make his decision, "I'm going to wait until signing day. As I said I want to take my time and really check everything out thoroughly."

Smith plays every position in the line except tight end. "Well, I'm very versatile and I played a little tight-end this summer but my place is either guard or tackle. I have good feet and I down block well. I'm good at pass blocking and I have good speed to pull. I've been working on my downfield blocking so I am getting much better at blocking linebackers."
