Despite striking out on top 50 forwards Keita Bates-Diop and Jae'Sean Tate, who both committed to Ohio State last month, the Michigan basketball coaching staff has continued trucking along with several highly coveted prospects still clamoring for an offer from the Wolverines. One of the players high on that list is 2014 Middletown (OH) high school forward Vince Edwards, who had an impressive season debut Friday night despite a close loss.
"We ended up losing by four cause we had a couple key turnovers at the end," Edwards told GoBlueWolverine. "They just basically beat us off our own turnovers."
"I did pretty well. I had 24 points, 15 rebounds and 4 assists."
Edwards, at 6'6 and 185 pounds, has the frame and the game Michigan is looking for with the ability to create for others, score on the perimeter and even fight for boards in the paint. Current Wolverine freshman Glenn Robinson III is filling this role admirably through the first seven games of the season, catching the eye of Edwards.
"That's exactly who they told me to watch," said Edwards. "He's performing great just coming in as a freshman. Of course he has big shoes to fill cause of his dad, but also he plays a great game."
Not only would Edward's skill set seamlessly slide into Michigan's strategy and rotation, his unselfish attitude would just add to the collection of talented, hardworking individuals already donning the Maize and Blue.
"That's why Coach Beilein told me I'd be a perfect fit for them," said Edwards. "I'm not a ‘me guy' and I like to play for the team. I honestly think it would be a perfect fit."
"They have the desire to win and they play together. They play great team ball."
Edwards previously planned to visit the Wolverines for a football game against Northwestern on November 10th, but his mother was called in to work at the last minute, forcing the trip to be canceled. Although disappointed, Edwards is working with his mom and the Michigan coaching staff to set up a visit to see the Wolverines in action.
"I'm going to make it up there pretty soon," said Edwards. "I just got to find a day that's good for her to get off."
"I've been in touch with Coach Beilein and Coach LaVall. We've been in great touch. They texted me before they went to the NIT and I talked to them recently as well."
Part of the conversation with the Michigan coaches has centered around and on the subject of a scholarship offer. Edwards, who hasn't actually visited the Wolverines before, stands to be the fifth recruit offered by Michigan in the 2014 class once he steps foot in Ann Arbor.
"They told me the offer is mine," said Edwards. "If I go there and I like what I see, the offer is there for me and is still there right now."
If and when the offer is made to Edwards, the Wolverines would be in position to catapult to the top of the Ohio forward's list.
"It would put them in a pretty high perspective for me of course," said Edwards. "It's a big school and it's also a great school. Playing up in Ann Arbor and seeing on the TV, it looks like a great place to play and crazy fans."
Admittedly, Edwards said his timetable would move up significantly, but would the offer on his visit be enough to secure an on the spot commitment?
"Right now I don't know for sure," said Edwards. "I got to give it some time."
In addition to Michigan, Edwards is receiving increased interest from fellow Big Ten programs Minnesota and Wisconsin, both of which are hoping to set up visits as well.
