Doles ready to visit UM this weekend

Drake Harris isn't the only member of Grand Rapids Christian high school that Michigan is currently courting. 2014 OL Tommy Doles has an offer from the Wolverines, and he talks about his plans heading into an unofficial visit this weekend.

College camps can create some tremendous pressure for high school student-athletes hoping to impress and earn a scholarship. What the camp setting also provides is the opportunity to work one on one with college coaches who know exactly what they're looking for in a player.

For 2014 Grand Rapids Christian offensive lineman Tommy Doles, his camp experience in Ann Arbor this past June let Michigan know he was exactly what the Wolverines wanted, and they extended a scholarship offer.

"It was great," Doles told GoBlueWolverine. "It was about a week after the camp, and I think I had just gotten back from a different camp. That was really exciting because obviously I know what type of school Michigan is."

Doles, who's had schools such as Michigan, Ohio State and Michigan State dropping by to inquire about him in recent weeks, plans on being in Ann Arbor for another unofficial visit this weekend. A trip he's looking forward to for different reasons.

"I'm going there mostly to look at academics there," said Doles. "I know Michigan has great academics, but I'm going to get to see some of the programs up close. Not too much else -- just trying to get a little bit more of a feel for it. I don't know how much football will be a part of it -- that's (academics) pretty much the main thing."

With no other visits planned, although Ohio State and Duke are trying to bring Doles on campus for an unofficial visit themselves, Doles trip to Michigan will add to his camp workout, his Barbecue at the Big House experience, and his Air Force game visit.

Could Doles visit this weekend be the final piece to the decision puzzle with Michigan securing an early commitment?

"I don't think that's very likely," said Doles. "I think I'm very early on in the process, and I have my options open right now. So, I'm not expecting to make a decision this early, just trying to know a little bit more about the school at this point."

"I guess a very small chance. It always could be possible."

Instead of playing basketball this winter, Doles is bulking up and getting ready for baseball season, as well as the nice, leisurely activity that comes for every Michigander in the winter.

"I've been working out after school with our team again," said Doles. "I'm not playing basketball this year but I've been going to baseball workouts and staying busy with school work and, now, shoveling snow too."
