Take one look at 2014 Dallas Skyline (Tex.) offensive tackle Ty Barrett and a double take will surely be in order. At 6'5, 300 pounds, Barrett possesses the size of a college offensive lineman. Sprinkle in athleticism and it's easy to see why schools such as Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, SMU, and Baylor recently dropped by his school to check up on him.
Thursday, Michigan sent two coaches all the way down to the Longhorn state to make their way over to Skyline and inquire about Barrett.
"Coach Hoke and coach Funk came by this morning," Barrett told GoBlueWolverine last (Thursday) night. "They just told my coach they like my footwork. It's just been a great experience."
As the Michigan coaches continue laying groundwork with Barrett, two family members of Barrett's, and former Michigan greats, are doing the same.
"My cousins are married to Tim Biakabutuka and Ron Bellamy," said Barrett. "I first met my cousin Tim a few years ago when him and my cousin first got married," said Barrett. "And then Ron I've known for a long time."
"I can always call them and they always say, ‘Go Blue,' every time I get off the phone with them."
After Hoke and Funk left Thursday, Barrett found himself on the phone shortly after to discuss the Wolverines.
"I talked to Ron tonight actually," said Barrett. "He called my mom and I was talking to him about what was happening, because he actually still talks to the coaching staff -- being alumni and everything -- so I talked to him about it."
"He said there's great tradition and obviously I have family up there."
Communicating over the phone in recent weeks, Barrett and the Wolverines have discussed an offer, although a formal scholarship hasn't been extended just yet.
"It's a possibility," said Barrett. "They didn't offer me today but I think it's coming soon. They just said they were going to keep a close eye on me this year and they like my film."
With family in the area and close ties to the University, Barrett intends on making the trek northeast to Michigan to reunite with the first college campus he's ever visited -- and his cousins, of course.
"I went to Michigan when I was very small so I plan on going back up there -- I have to make a trip up there," said Barrett. "Most likely it'll probably be in the spring, or during the summer to visit family too."
In upcoming weeks Barrett has a full slate of visits set that fall a little closer to home on the map.
"This weekend I'm going to Oklahoma, next weekend I'm going to Texas," said Barrett. "The week after that I'm going to Texas Tech, then I'm going to Ole Miss, and Oklahoma State. And Duke in March."
