Sam Webb: Before we talk any more specifically about recruiting, just kind of very generally tell me how things went for you on the football field last year.
Steven Parker: “Things, they went great last year, it was a good season for us. I thought I was in on a lot of tackles and I think I ended up with three picks this year and we ended up winning state, so that’s pretty good.”
Sam Webb: Do you remember what your individual stats were?
Steven Parker: “I think somewhere around 70 tackles, three interceptions, and one forced fumble. I think it was 74 tackles or something.”
Sam Webb: Break down your game. Tell me what people see when they come to watch you play.
Steven Parker: “I would probably say just one tall safety that is versatile, can do anything really that you want me to do. I can play up on the line and man up a receiver. I can play back as a safety or I can even come up and make some tackles. I am pretty physical so I can bring the physicality too.”
Sam Webb: Aside from Michigan, what scholarship offers do you have on the table right now?
Steven Parker: “OU (Oklahoma), Ohio State (Oklahoma State), Alabama, Nebraska, Tulsa, Oregon State, Washington State. There are more that I just can’t remember. I think I have a total of eight or nine offers right now.”
Sam Webb: Give me an idea of what your interest level is in Michigan right now. What do you know, if anything, about the Wolverines?
Steven Parker: “The only really thing I know about Michigan is that their biggest rival is Ohio State. I know that is a huge game and a huge rival.”
Sam Webb: How did things unfold? Did they show interest in you first, causing you to have interest in them? Or was it the other way around?
Steven Parker: “I was interested in any school, which I’ve said in all my interviews that I’ve had with different schools and with other scouts and stuff like that. I want to say that they probably started it, sent me some mail, a couple of their coaches friending me on Facebook and twitter and stuff like that. From that point on, I just kept getting mail and my dad helped me out by calling Michigan just to see if they watched my highlight film. After that, they ended up offering me.”
Sam Webb: Did they talk at all about trying to get you up to Ann Arbor?
Steven Parker: “Yes sir. They did talk about it a little bit. I told them that I would try to get up there, I just don’t know when I’ll have the time, but I’m going to try and find a way to get up there pretty soon.”
Sam Webb: Lay out your visit plan for me. How many schools do you think you are going to make it out to or visit before you start thinking about making a decision?
Steven Parker: “That’s my thing… I am kind of talking about it right now with my parents. I still have another summer and I still don’t know when I am going to want to commit, if I want to commit before football season to take all the pressure off of me or if I just want to try to wait a little bit and commit after football season. I am still trying to think of it and that is kind of where it falls right now. I’m just going to try and go through the process and look at every school I can and hopefully take my officials my senior year.”
Sam Webb: What places have you visited already?
Steven Parker: “Right now just OU and OSU. I am going to try to make some other schools like Kansas State, Texas, Alabama, some of those different caliber schools. I am also going to try to make it somewhere down there in the north if I can. It just depends how much time I have because I also play AAU ball so it just kind of depends.”
Sam Webb: What are going to be the biggest factors in your ultimate decision?
Steven Parker: “I would probably saying getting a good relationship with the coaches, especially the DB coach because that is probably the one I am going to be spending most of my time with if I get to college. I would probably say a great relationship with the coach. The school’s tradition, I am really big on that, the academics, and I would say that is about it and also getting used to my surroundings, just calling that place home.”
Sam Webb: One thing I did not hear you mention was distance. Is distance from home going to be a factor for you?
Steven Parker: “No, no sir.”
Sam Webb: I ask this of all guys from the South, but what about weather?
Steven Parker: “I am not a big cold weather guy but if that is what it takes to play D1 football then I can get used to it.”
Sam Webb: Do you have a top school or a top few schools on your list at this point?
Steven Parker: “Right now it is just OU and OSU because those are the only two schools I have visited. Once I get to visit other schools, then I will try making my decision.”
