Drake Harris: "(Coach Hoke) tackled me!"

Pandemonium. That's the only way to describe the scene at Schembechler Hall this afternoon when the #1 player in Michigan and one of the top receivers in the country made clear his intention to don the Maize & Blue.

After visiting Ohio State a few short days ago, Grand Rapids Christian standout, Drake Harris returned to Ann Arbor yesterday for yet another overnight visit.  This time he took in the Wolverines annual spring game before spending the afternoon and evening furthering the relationships with his prospective coaches and teammates.  Those interactions confirmed to him a realization that he’d long saw coming.

“It just felt right,” said Harris of his Michigan commitment.  “I was up here like four times this past spring.  It really was coming down to Ohio State and here.  Ohio State… I liked it a lot and it was cool, but I just got the feeling that (Michigan) is the right place for me.  So I just went ahead and committed.”

“They’re just real people (at Michigan).  Coach Hoke, Coach Heck, Coach Ferrigno, Coach Singletary… the whole coaching staff here, they’re all great people.  They talked about the #1 jersey (and) they said I would have to earn it.  They said that I’m the only recruit that they’ve talked about the #1 with.  I was happy when I heard about that.  But they said I would have to work to get it.”

“I just trust them.  I want to put my talent in their hands because I know they can do great things with me and I know they’re going to do great things at this university with the football program.”

Based on the reactions that bellowed throughout Schembechler Hall, the Michigan coaching staff thinks great things on the horizon as well.

“I went to meet with Coach Hoke, I told him face to face, and he just tackled me,” Harris said laughingly. “When I told him he was excited.  Wilton Speight was outside of the room when I committed and he heard Coach Hoke yell, so he ran in there and he grabbed me.  He was just happy.  Michael Ferns texted me right then and Mason Cole also texted me.  They were all happy.  We’re just trying to build a great class here.”

From this point on Harris plans to play an active role in the construction.

“I’m just visiting Michigan,” he replied when asked if he still planned to see other schools.  “The recruiting thing is over for me. I’m going to be an enrollee.   I’m going to help recruit other guys. Probably Da'Shawn Hand and Jabrill Peppers.  I’m going to talk to those two and try to get them over here.”
