Tuesday GoBlueWolverine Chat Transcript

Tuesday's chat with GoBlueWolverine's Tom Beaver and Kyle Bogenschutz hits on a variety of topics including the aftermath of Jabrill Peppers' commitment, the biggest targets moving forward, wide receiver recruiting, linebacker recruiting, and some basketball recruiting!

<TomBeaver> Jamarco Jones unless he goes elsewhere lol, is the top O recruit at the moment, IMO

<bighouse2323> Thanks

<TomBeaver> Joneswould be the cherry on top as far as the OL goes, the young OL

<snic2u> Tom my family is good friends with the Uptons, being from the St. Joe are, Kate is Jeff's kid

<kcpros> Ohio is still the clear leader for Jones?

<deibs21> Jones and OSU lean right now??

<rgarg1> Seems like Ol recruits wary given all the horses we got the last 2 classes

<kazoowolve> I would not commit hari kari if we whiff on an OT this year.

<TomBeaver> snic - gotcha

<bigshooter1> Tom whats your gut say on Winovich?

<snic2u> one of the whirlpool great grandkids

<kcpros> Tom, have you seen a better 3 year cycle for UM recruiting?

<kazoowolve> i love whirlpool hiers

<TomBeaver> deibs -- people are assuming that, but A2 is not pessimistic ... if they do gt another visit then they have their shot

<KyleBogie> RE: kcpros. I would think Michigan would prefer more of a slot, quicker type to plug into the class but if they want Williams and feel he can do both I'd trust them. One interesting thing to consider is maybe Dennis

norfleet or Jourdan Lewis will play in the slot...

<TomBeaver> kcpros - sure

<TomBeaver> Whirlpoos .. Whirlpool - yep

<kcpros> Kyle I agree I think Lewis in the slot is very intriguing

<KyleBogie> RE: garg1. There is some of that being thrown at these kids right now.

<TomBeaver> Not sure U-M even wants a slot WR anymore, really ... not as we've come to think about it

<KyleBogie> RE: kcpros. That's where I'd like to see him and that's saying a lot because I think the world of him as a playmaking, cover conrner.

<hrod1203> I hope Lewis plays slot. They have so much depth at CB now it seems

<kazoowolve> So, who are the next RT and LT?

<TomBeaver> So U-M'd want Holmes because he's darn good, not because he's a slot

<TomBeaver> Holmes may get his shot to come to U-M, at the BBQ

<kcpros> I agree but size maybe an issue and we seem to have solid numbers at CB

<KyleBogie> Holems highlights are as impressive as any receiver.

<skuzzim> anybody, a 'hand' report

<TomBeaver> Lewis -- he's a damn goodcover guy, that's the thing ... maybe the most natural at it of anyone they have

<deibs21> Homes Scott and Williams in that order?

<Denali00> Is Hand coming for the BBQ?

<TomBeaver> Hand -- they're workingon it, the BBQ I mean

<kcpros> I agree I would prefer Holmes to Williams not knocking Williams but giving Holmes credit

<bighouse2323> Wouldn't mind seeing Norfleet in te slot. Quick and shifty guy

<TomBeaver> kcproc- Hom... er, Holmes, was very good, not great, at the U-M camp last summer

<BlueFan31> Tom, agree on Jourdan Lewis. Pure man cover coner, which is something that we lack in our defensive backfield.

<kazoowolve> Holmes is bigger than Drake. Not as fast. He actually reminds me of Michael Floyd, a little.

<TomBeaver> but if he's grown an inch or 2 that'd help

<rgarg1> Kyle and Tom...who are the 3 most important football recruits left in this 2014 class? Jabrill and Drake have to be the 2 most important

<TomBeaver> IfHolmesisbigger thanHarris then Holmes has gotten aLOT bigger

<TomBeaver> damn space bar!

<kcpros> But he got an offer out of camp which is saying something.

<kazoowolve> looks like a twitter hashtag, Tom

<KyleBogie> re: KCPROC. tOM IS right, Holmes was good, appeared to be pretty worn down by the final day, which, I'd be tired too after a long week!

<kcpros> When is camp this year and who are your early favorites to earn an offer out of camp?

<TomBeaver> rgarg - t ... to me, Harris is the most important recruit as far as needs ... then Peppers is simply a Super

<BlueFan31> Not Tom, but, whichever SAM linebacker we get will become vitally important. We have very little depth at the SAM.

<kazoowolve> He looks big to me in those highlights

<TomBeaver> Bogie - good point, and he was very young

<TomBeaver> re Holmes

<KyleBogie> Kids arrive for camp on June 16th, starts Monday the 17th I believe

<rgarg1> Tom...getting Drake Harris from MSU and a HUGE position of need has to be one of the biggest recruiting coups of all time for us..I know because he wanted football but still..

<TomBeaver> Harris was 'a natural' at camp last summer, much moreso than Holmes, IMO

<KyleBogie> I'll say it, Harris was smoooooooooooooth at wide receiver at camp last year. Obvious he needed to play football.

<kcpros> Harris just came back from SD and that was what they said a natural route runner and pass catcher. I can't tell you how happy we got him will make it tough though because I have to root for him againts EGR

<TomBeaver> Campis June 16-20 ... there's quite a little list of campers on the All Visits list ... I bet there'll be a few offers handed out, they WANT to hand out offers at camp

<rgarg1> Tom...is Brady Pallante the real deal? Poor kid not been rated yet..if Mattison likes him I love him1!!

<kazoowolve> I hope we find an in-state O tackle at this camp to offer

<KyleBogie> RE: rgarg1. Completely trust Mattison on that one. Watched coach work with Brady Pallante at camp.

<TomBeaver> Pallante -- mmmm, I was surprised they offered him ... but he's a wrestler and I bet that was what tipped the scale for him

<TomBeaver> he won a state championship in wrestling? right?

<kcpros> state champion no less:)

<rgarg1> Tom...seems like Mattison can get any DT he wants...so just surprised Pallante hasn't gotten more press

<TomBeaver> He's just not a very big guy, not as big as Mike Martin at the same age

<kcpros> He lost to the guy earlier in the season and came into the finals an underdog

<bighouse2323> If he is anything like Mike Martin sounds good to me

<KyleBogie> I was more surprised Pallante waited to make a commitment thatn I was to see him offered! Thought he would be an ""on the spot commit"" type guy.

<TomBeaver> Bogie - you got that right

<kazoowolve> Pallante's highlights are pretty awesome. He just crumbles everyone

<deibs21> seems they could have waited a while to see if they missed on others guys before offering

<rgarg1> Kyle...Pallante can be a player for us you think

<KyleBogie> RE: ragarg1. Not everyone in all of these classes are gong to be all-americans obviosuly, but can a good portion fill a role with some standing out above the rest? Yes. I think Pallante will fill a role and can be in the

rotation on the defensive line. Anything more than that is ""gravy"" as our friend Tom likes to say!

<TomBeaver> Here's the thing - and this is why I poo-poo rankings/ratings. Us in the industry are not at the level of the coaches as far as evaluations ... they laugh at some of the industry evaluations

<rgarg1> Looking at the last few classes, we have difference makers all over the field. Drake Harris was so HUGE though on every level

<TomBeaver> So -- I watched te(oops) them work out Pallance, extensively ... as did Kyle, Sam, etc. And I though, ""No way they offer that guy"" ... and then he won a wrestling championship and they offered ... so who am I

to doubt them? No one, is who.

<KyleBogie> So true Tom. We have an idea of what they're supposed to look like. Coaches know EXACTLY what they need to see.

<TomBeaver> But the best 3 guys at camp last summer, my IMO: Harris, the other Harris (RB), and the Canadian QB ... they were the standouts

<KyleBogie> iTotally agree with Tom regarding the camp standouts.

<TomBeaver> then you had Holmes, Montae Nicholson ... very good but not great ... and Pallante who I was surprised got offered

<kazoowolve> I get the canadian QB mixed up with the Swedish QB

<TomBeaver> I think this year's camp'll be better than last year's

<hrod1203> What about Stribling?

<scommand10> how long till Westphal commits? If that happens is it super or bust at DB?

<TomBeaver> Whestphal -- I think he's trying to hold out, take visits ... but U-M has to feel good there, IMO

<skuzzim> ould d harris still seem as solid as he once appeared

<TomBeaver> Then what? Well, guys like Adoree and Juj u are longer shots - tho Juju could play slot Wr soo just as well

<TomBeaver> Damien Harris? I'd say so

<TomBeaver> Stribling - yeah, thanks ... he was like Nicholson and Holmes to me, at that level ... I think they were happy to see a tall CB they could offer and get to say yes

<TomBeaver> But Stribling, IIRC< actually camp es oops, start again

<skuzzim> what are probability for nicholson

<scommand10> Kyle do you see any instate sleeper to keep our eye on late? it seems to happen every year when more spots open up

<TomBeaver> Stribling, IIRC, campedas a WR and S really ... U-M tried him at corner, liked him, they offered

<hrod1203> cool

<zbforged> Is Gelen Robinson going to camp?

<TomBeaver> he was very skinny, very ... but quick for a tall guy

<kcpros> Sam mentioned last week he thought our best chance at Safety was Erick Smith that was a surprise to me

<Dickison> Stribling camped for a week as well; they got a really good look at him, even after having 3 dbs committed

<TomBeaver> Gelen- dunno, maybe Kyle knows ... but I do not see them offering that guy

<TomBeaver> Dickison - yeah, and he' from a school they like ... and he was the firt TALL corner

<KyleBogie> Have not heard from nor been able to confirm if Gelen plans to camp. I think Camp would be his way to earn an offer but I don't see it happening at this point.

<kcpros> Stribling got a lot of praise during his senior year

<TomBeaver> Erick Smith - yeah don't sleep on that guy ... may be our Glenville kid for this year

<TomBeaver> Ginn has a lot of control over where his kids go, and he keeps 'em quiet

<kcpros> That sounds so strange to me Glenville and UM I know we have two guys just saying. I really thought he and Lattimore wanted to play together that is why it would surprise me

<KyleBogie> RE: scommand10. Depending on how things shake out I think Jalen Ebmbry would be the closest to that at this point.

<TomBeaver> well, for one thing, goot possibiity (IMO) that OSU won't want Smith

<kcpros> Good call Kyle was my thinking

<scommand10> thx kyle

<Mdjohnny5> Hey Tom/Kyle, any unoffered guys you think we should keep an eye on?

<zbforged> Why is that Tom?

<kcpros> Smith had an impressive camp tour I thought

<TomBeaver> JimmySwain for one

<kcpros> I like Swain wouldn't mind him at all

<TomBeaver> lots of '15 kids of course

<KyleBogie> Regarding Erick Smith, saw him in Indianapolis at a combine I don't remember the name of a few months ago and in MY OPINION, because I know Sam and Josh felt differently, I thought he performed the best of

any of the defensive backs there. Knocked down several passes and picked one off.

<TomBeaver> Kyle - how tall is Erick Smith?

<zbforged> Why wouldn't ohio go after Smith?

<TomBeaver> I he 6-0?

<kcpros> I remember the mention that Smith was so physical guys couldn't get off the line on him

<KyleBogie> Smith is every bit of 190, well built, I'd say he's closer to 6-0 than 6-1 though.

<TomBeaver> K

<deibs21> If I remember right, I think I watched Smith's film and thought it was very good but I'm also just a fan haha

<KyleBogie> Speed will be something the coaches might want to see up close and personal/.

<rgarg1> Tom, does Ted Ginn really like Brady Hoke? Hoke has to be the most likable HC in college football

<TomBeaver> yeah ... on the speed thing ... he could play SS tho

<TomBeaver> rgarg- Ginn and Hoke are prety close supposedly, yeah

<kcpros> Maybe he can turn Lattimore UM's way:)

<kcpros> Lattimore can play slot, DB, safety etc

<TomBeaver> I'd bet a penny that Lattimore goes to OSU

<KyleBogie> RE: rgarg1. Had the chance to drive down to Cleveland to interview he and Henry on signing day two years gago. He spoke highly of Brady on and off camera.

<kcpros> I would bet more then that

<KyleBogie> Regarding Lattimore, from what I've heard he's definitely an OSU lean. Lattimore is on a different level athletically.

<rgarg1> Kyle..what is about Hoke that every HS coach seems to love??

<skuzzim> will the running game work this year. will the road graders clear space. will the freshman be able to find that space

<unhet> Since we're fairly solid, we shouldn't be taking anyone w/questionable speed- need to have a high hurdle there IMO

<TomBeaver> Hoke is just a gym teacher, that's what coaches like, kids like, everyone likes

<djpgolf42> What are our chances with Hand 25% or greater?

<TomBeaver> djpgolf42 - yes, defintiely

<djpgolf42> 50%?

<TomBeaver> 25% or greater ... lol

<djpgolf42> I tried :)

<KyleBogie> RE: rgarg1. While there's time to be serious and focused like on the field or in practice or inthe eweight room, recruiting is about communicating, being yourself, and friendly and Brady seems to have it figured out

as far as when to be engaging, what buttons to push, and when to get serious about things. Likeable guy.

<kcpros> I aHow about percent on Mcdowell?

<TomBeaver> Me personally I think he has to visit one more time before we move it past 25%

<TomBeaver> McDowell I'd put int he 50% area

<TomBeaver> But Kyle may know better on that one

<djpgolf42> Have we ever had 2 top 10 types commit? I'm sure we have prior to rankings.

<skuzzim> tom, which past recruit would you compare mcdowell to

<deibs21> For some reason I have always felt Hand would be a kid that really like Hoke/Mattison's approach to recruiting

<TomBeaver> djpgolf42 - I've wondered that ... don't think so but now sure

<kinmedic> Are our chances realistic for Yeargin?

<KyleBogie> Regarding McDowell, my opionion is hand has been since Sound Mind Sound Body last summer that Malik will end up at Michigan.

<skuzzim> henson, terrell, vargas

<TomBeaver> skuzzim -- what's his name now ... the big guy from New Mexico

<deibs21> Branch

<KyleBogie> Ntothing is guaranteed regarding McDowell though

<TomBeaver> yeah

<TomBeaver> skuzzim - good one... talk about Super-group that didn't amount to that much in the end (on 2 of the 3 I mean)

<skuzzim> bracnh would be better than big wc

<unhet> among Fargas, Henson, Walker, Terrell, there was probably at least 1 servcie that had 2 in top 10.

<kinmedic> is damian harris going to be visiting anytime soon? Seems like forever ago that he was up

<zbforged> Hoke needs to visit McDowell dressed as his favorit cartoon character.

<TomBeaver> Yeargin - my IMO, yes, because of academics ... they'll have a shot

<rgarg1> Tom, Yeargin a serious student??

<bonesnjnts> hey all

<kinmedic> would love to get yeargin - he seems like he would be an ideal SAM

<TomBeaver> Damien Harris -- dunno if he's got a summer visit scheduled to U-M, but I expect to see him on campus this summer

<TomBeaver> Yeargin - that's the impression I get

<kinmedic> ok good - he's at the top of my wish list for next year

<djpgolf42> How good is Damien Harris? Top 25 type/super?

<TomBeaver> Harris, Campbell ... those guys seem to keep throwing out Blue comments

<kinmedic> I would say Harris will be top 3 RB in the country

<kazoowolve> Campbell especially

<TomBeaver> djpgolf - I'd say ... he'd make the Tom Beaver Top 25

<bonesnjnts> im in the beaver top 25, right?

<TomBeaver> Kyle is tough tho, not sure he'd make the Bogie TOp 25

<bonesnjnts> (thats what she said)

<kcpros> Michael Scott is reborn

<BlueFan31> I'm very interested to see if Alex Malzone and Jayru Campbell camp at UM next month, especially now that we've begun offering '15 QBs already

<djpgolf42> Next time you have a BOGO, you should name it the Bogie BOGO

<KyleBogie> Haha, he'd be in there!

<TomBeaver> I thnk U-M will now leverage the ""not many spots left"" thing ... we'll see if they manage to create some pressure at the BBQ

<TomBeaver> Alex Malzone!

<bighouse2323> Could Damien Harris make a early decision?

<rgarg1> Tom, whatever happened to Ronald Johnson..Went to USC and never heard of him. Wasted potential??

<kazoowolve> I am sure someone asked, so forgive me, is De'sean Hand coming to the bbq?

<TomBeaver> Harris -- dunno ... I hope so

<TomBeaver> Rojo -- playing him at Wr helped USc but not Rojo

<scommand10> Tom/Kyle does Peppers have that phenom talent that only comes around every few years? Based on his film i see AP or Reggie Bush type talent.

<bonesnjnts> was strange in ann arbor today--tornado sirens going off

<TomBeaver> He was their best Wr not a pro at that spot tho

<rgarg1> Tom..ROJO a CB???

<BlueFan31> Rojo signed with the 49ers I believe

<TomBeaver> Rojo woulda been best at S IMO

<TomBeaver> what round?

<rgarg1> Tom..he was that talented??

<kcpros> small safety

<TomBeaver> the guy is physical ... not a speedster but physical

<TomBeaver> my IMO

<kcpros> 6th round SF

-- End of Replay --

<kcpros> Speight was interviewed on the west coast he was interviewed and was posted in the victor's club he mentioned good news coming and could be a couple of pieces of good news

<KyleBogie> RE: kcpros. Sam is a happy guy and alwyas seems to have energy BUT yeah he was pretty pumped.

<bighouse2323> What is K.J. Williams timeline? Seems things are heating upwith him again.

<KyleBogie> RE: hrod1203. Kameron will be in town. He was supposed to wait to take visits until this fall so for him to change that and fly out here on his own dime says A LOT. MY opinion is and has been for a while that

Michigan is the potential leader but at least top 3 for Chatman. This visit will be important.

<kcpros> Here is the speight interview:

12http://recruiting.scout.com/2/1294089.html

<KyleBogie> Also important to note that Chatman is having a TERRIFIC spring on the AAU circuit and is sure to rise in the rankings.

<hrod1203> sounds good, thanks

<KyleBogie> RE: bighouse2323. Speaking with his coach he indicated that K.J. and Michigan had discussed the possibliity of a commitment. I think it could come at any time and is something that because he's down to two,

would want to get overwith soon.

<bighouse2323> Thanks

<KyleBogie> Probably an obvious question but were (where*) was everyone's excitement level at yesterday, excuse me, sUNDAY, for the Peppers announcement? Compare to any other recruit in the past ?

<kcpros> Kyle if we land Chase who do you see as the 3rd LB, at least right now the best shot. And if we don't land Chase the 2 guys for UM? Also, do you see Swain as an offeree?

<kcpros> I think Peppers is the best player I have seen on film. The kid also has a chip on his shoulder and wants to succeed badly which bodes well for his performance. He doesn't seem like a problem child just a guy who wants

it badly. That makes me extremely excited.

<gerrygarner> any rumblings on if brunson or barefield or going to visit for hoops?

<bighouse2323> Well I watched ESPN U for the extra hour and a half just not to miss the announcement. Loved the freestyle rap and all the pub Michigan is getting from it.

<kazoowolve> sorry, testing...

<KyleBogie> RE: kcpros. My opinion is that if Winovich commits they'll reasses s their situation at linebacker and see who or IF they need a third. Still several on the table but I'd keep an eye on Richard Yeargin, he's a big timer

they're talking to more and more.

<hrod1203> I was probably just as excited for Derrick Green. The way this staff recruits I didnt have to go back far. lol

<hrod1203> Maybe eve Drake harris

<Denali00> When is the BBQ?

<KyleBogie> re: GERRYGARNER. From a proximity standpoint Brunson definitely seems more likely. I know the Barefield's love Michigan but with the travel schedule AAU demands it's tough to set up a time to come.

<rgarg1> Kyle, is Hoke/Mattison et al the best recruiting staff in the country...at least top 5

<TomBeaver> HI Guys

<deibs21> The thing I like about so many commits early is the staff can really concentrate on the top targets left and really hit them hard

<BlueFan31> Kyle, I hope we leave the door open for Darrion Owens, even if we land Winovich

<hrod1203> ehey Tom

<hrod1203> hey

<kazoowolve> TJB said that Mattison and Hoke were recruiting beasts...even before we were done whining about not getting Harbaugh

<KyleBogie> RE: rgarg1. Tough to give a ranking like that because I don't necessarily talk to players/coaches about other schools and their staffs but Mattison and Hoke have clearly taken things to another level o the recruiting

front.

<TomBeaver> Ibelieve the currentl thinkingis to take 2 more LBs, but it's always in flux

<TomBeaver> kazoo -- yessir

<Crowpuppy> 2 OLBs Tom?

<TomBeaver> Both 'in the old days' were known as (1) recruiters, (20 oops ... (2) position coaches

<rgarg1> Kyle...IYO, who does Michigan get in 2014 and 2015 basketball class using your gut??

<TomBeaver> Crowpuppy -- it looks that way

<deibs21> Hand and McDowell have to be the two biggest fish remaining correct?

<TomBeaver> but you have to assume they are constantly evaluagin

<TomBeaver> evaluating

<Crowpuppy> Ok, thanks

<kcpros> George Campbell just tweeted this: G^`03a3^`03a9RG^`03a3 C^`0394MP^`03b2^`03a3LL^`200f@GeorgeCampbell03m #GoBlue

<kazoowolve> I still think we get a shot at Jackson or Smith. Like an official

<kazoowolve> visit

<TomBeaver> CertainlyHoke/Mattison and mMeyer-n-co are the premere recruiters in the B1G ... nationally it'd be hard to find 10 staffs that recruit as good or better than this U-M staff

<rgarg1> You know what got me excited...we got 2 difference makers in D Green/S Morris in last years class and now Drake Harris (Needed him BAD)/Jabrill in this years. 4 diff makers on the field potentially1!

<TomBeaver> Top 5? mmmm, that's harder to say ... there are certainly 5 staffs that recruit as well

<KyleBogie> RE: rgarg1. We'll see how the classes play out but in 2014 I can see Booker and Chatman being a part of this class and feel, not cnonfident but ok in saying that. In 2015 I do feel like Kennard will be a part of the

class , I could see Barefield being the point, and I could see either Elijah Thomas or Noah Dickerson in there as well as of right now.

<rgarg1> Tom...agree with you 100%..This staff is amazing at recruiting.

<TomBeaver> At come, oops - at c - oops, stratch this

<TomBeaver> at some point the team'll be loaded most everywhere and that'll make it harder to recruit, IMO

<Denali00> Kyle..whay about Stone or Zimmerman in 15'

<kcpros> I think Alabama is experiencing some of that this year

<kazoowolve> Kyle, Looney and Zimmerman pipe dreams right now?

<TomBeaver> Zimmerman -- I'm told by someone who knows the family that Arizona will be strong competition

<TomBeaver> but U-M should be right there with Zimmerman ... so I'm told

<TomBeaver> He's probably the one hoops recruit I have a little inside info on, lol

<rgarg1> Tom, off topic, but does Kate Upton had UM connections or something? My friends were telling me they were huge UM boosters

<KyleBogie> RE: Denali00. Zimmerman wants to visit, until that happens I won't bump him up. Stone has visited and is interested and has ties -- but we're taling about the best player in the entire country in his class, stiff

compeitition.

<TomBeaver> Kate is niece of US Rep Fred ... and yes the Uptons are big U-M boosters ... I have a little connection there, one of them is a friend of mine

<kcpros> Tom/Kyle is there a reason the staff would push KJ instead of waiting for Scott or Holmes. I know a bird in the hand theory but it seems Holmes and Scott would be a better contrast to what we already have.

<rgarg1> Any one else in that family as hot as her : )

<KyleBogie> RE: kazoowolve. I wouldn't say anyone is a ""pipe"" dream but for Michigan basketall right now, they've earned the right to be in the recruitment of the most talented players in the country, and are in it, I just

don't think a guy like Looney is close and wouldn't tip his hand if he were.

<bighouse2323> Who is the top recruit for O right now?

<TomBeaver> kcpros - sure there's a reason, definitely

<deibs21> Did she send you a sneak peak of the SI swim suit issue then??

<FYOST> Quite a good friend

<kcpros> Care to share:)

<TomBeaver> rgarg- that I would not know ...

<rgarg1> Tom...is she the UM difference ; )

<TomBeaver> Peppers - gosh ... we'll see. Even Woodson didn't lok like a star until the last game of his frosh season ... so I don't want to put too much pressure on a kid

<djpgolf42> you reap what you sow

<bonesnjnts> Ray Allen is still alive

<kazoowolve> is that a question, bones?

<TomBeaver> Rojo was not in control of his life ... I feel sorry for the guy
