Webblog - The Opening - Day 1 Morning Notes

Da'Shawn Hand turns in another dominant performance, Adoree Jackson gets candid about Michigan's standing, the distance factor with Montae Nicholson, plus the top five performing Michigan targets.

“I Put Hands on People”

That was the remark came from one Mr. Da'Shawn Hand after another session in which he didn’t lose a single rep.  The nation’s #1 defensive prospect came into the event with a bigger target on his back than most, and it was clear that a number of offensive linemen wanted to test themselves against this year’s standard. The Woodbridge, Va. star made them pay. (Check back later for video on the one-on-ones)

On the recruiting front, there has been no change since he narrowed his list of favorites to to Michigan, Alabama, and Florida a few weeks back.  However he did indicate that he will NOT be in attendance at Michigan's barbecue at the Big House. The Wolverines' recruits have been nonetheless active, though. For his part Hand maintains that the correspondences are all in fun. As a matter of fact he doesn’t really pay attention to to most of them.  That said, it was once again obvious that Jabrill Pepper’s connects with him on a level that many other can't.

“That’s my man,” reiterated Hand.

For that matter so too is Michigan sports management professor Mark Rosentraub.  Hand’s reaction to the mere mention of one of his would-be advisors in Ann Arbor spoke volumes about how the Wolverines’ stack up academically to the other suitors on his list.  Stay tuned for that in a video interview later today.

Track & Adoree Jackson

Gardena (Calif.) Serra CB Adoree Jackson has long mentioned his desire to compete in track in college in preparation for the Summer Olympics.  Michigan, meanwhile, has made clear its policy of not allowing prospects to compete in other sports until their sophomore seasons.  Before today the five star prospect hadn’t expressed that as being a major deterrent for the Maize & Blue.  Today he acknowledged publicly what some have suspected privately… the Wolverines’ standing is adversely impacted.

He is still contemplating visiting Michigan later this month, but he doesn’t plan on being at the barbecue at the Big House.  He indicated that he would like to attend on his own without other recruits around so he can focus on the school and the coaches. The trip would likely take place a week or two in advance of the barbecue.

He also mentioned thatthere is a chance that he doesn’t make it to that or any other visits prior to the season.  Even if he doesn’t he will narrow he plans to narrow his list of suitors to five.

Is distance really not a factor for Montae Nicholson?

The Monroeville (PA) Gateway DB has mentioned recently that his mom had relaxed her desire to see him go to school within a four-hour radius.  While that is technically true, when I spoke to the four-star prospect's mother today it was clear that she is going to use her powers of suggestion for programs a bit closer to home.  And yes, Michigan is still courting him.

Top Performing Michigan Targets - Morning Session

  3. Adoree Jackson – Blazing speed & quickness
  4. Minkah Fitzpatrick – Prototype size and speed… just needs to keep getting stronger
  5. George Campbell – Big time target that like Fitzpatrick needs to keep getting stronger. Fights the ball at times
