CHICAGO--Last season senior safety Jordan Kovacs was without question the leader of the Michigan defense.

Well, Kovacs has since graduated and now senior safety Thomas Gordon has stepped into the role as "leader" and has taken upon himself to get the Wolverines' defense ready for the 2013 season.

"Yeah, it is big expectations," said Gordon on being a senior leader. "Coach (Greg) Mattison looks for me to be that guy that gets the guys going before every practice and make sure we're ready to come in and compete. It's a big weight on my shoulders. But you know, I have taken it by the horns and I feel confident with it. I feel like it's natural."

With being a leader and possibly a captain of the Michigan defense-- comes big time expectations for Gordon and the Michigan defense.

"We just got to get better," Gordon said. "That Sugar Bowl year we laid the foundation of what this defense wanted to be. We had the No.1 red zone defense that year. Then last year we had the No. 1 pass defense. We just got to keep on stacking and stacking and getting better each year. I think we made some strides last year, but got to make bigger strides this year."

Players to look out for this season

"Well I know I can point out two for sure. Jared Wilson cause, obviously, he is with me at the safety. He has so many questions, 'cause this will be his first time fully stepping in and being a starter. And Delonte Hollowell, he had a real good spring. And you could tell the improvement he made practice by practice. The coaches and defense are waiting on him to see what he is going to do for fall camp."

Blake Countess' Recovery

"I am no doctor, but from what I have seen from 7-on-7s and working out, he has his speed back and is cutting very well. But like I said, I am not a doctor to asess whether he is ready to go or not."
