CARROLLTON, Ohio—2014 St. Clairsville (Ohio) linebacker Michael Ferns kicks his fourth and final season of prep football off this Friday. Last week, GoBlueWolverine made the trek to Fern’s final scrimmage against Carrollton (Ohio) high school, leading up to the opener.
“It was great,” Ferns said of the scrimmage action. “This was real football. You get to those camps and there’s different kinds of athletes but I think you really see who’s who when you get on the field (in pads).”
Michigan’s first commitment in the 2014 class, Ferns is just over four months from officially moving to Ann Arbor as an early enrollee. Not trying to look ahead too much or too quickly, Ferns is utilizing his time this fall to improve as much as possible at his linebacker position, showing good burst and physical hits in the scrimmage loss to Carrollton.
“I’m counting down (the days until he heads to Michigan),” Ferns said. “I know it’s coming up but I have things to do here before I make it up there.
“I’ve just been working on making my reads quicker and getting to the ball as fast as I can. And that’s going to make things a lot easier once I get to the next level when the speed really picks up.”
Now up to 16 commitments in Michigan’s class of 2014, Ferns is joined at the linebacker position by Chase Winovich, Noah Furbush and Jared Wangler. Already building camaraderie among the crew, Ferns and future roommate, Winovich, have managed to hang out several times this summer, away from Ann Arbor.
“We’re all really close,” Ferns said. “The whole team, in general. We keep in contact as much as we can. Chase and I, we’ve actually gotten together a couple times this summer. He’s only an hour away from me so that makes things a lot easier. And we’re looking towards rooming when we get up on campus.”
