Hoke: Decide Anytime on Jake Ryan's Status

Michigan coach Brady Hoke addresses the status of junior captain Jake Ryan heading into Penn State, Kyle Kalis' progress, and more (VIDEO included).

ANN ARBOR—What is the status of junior captain Jake Ryan heading into Michigan’s road contest at Penn State?

Who knows.

Michigan coach Brady Hoke took question after question at his Monday press conference and was peppered with more inquiries about the star linebacker on Wednesday, giving away little.

“I knew that would be the first question,” Hoke said with a grin Wednesday. “We got another big day (of practice) today. We’ll see where he’s at.”

On Monday, fellow captain Taylor Lewan said “Jake is Jake” when asked how his now short haired teammate has looked in practice since being cleared by doctors.

Pressed further about how Ryan has looked in practice Hoke simply said he “seems to” hold up well but at the same time is not taking as many reps as Brennen Beyer and Cameron Gordon.

As far as when a decision could be made on Ryan’s status for Saturday, Hoke was yet again vague.

“He’s traveled every game so, I could make it Saturday, possibly,” he said. “I could make it, tonight.”

On the other side of the ball, redshirt freshman right guard Kyle Kalis continues to work his way back from a minor injury he suffered in the fourth quarter of Michigan’s win over Minnesota.

Kalis was limited in Tuesday’s practice but Hoke said he’ll “do everything today.”

Hoke later added “He’s ok. He’s a little ginger but he’ll be ok. He’s a pretty tough kid.”
