The twists and turns continue in the recruitment of Southfield (Mi.) standout Malik McDowell. The five-star defensive end has tentatively switched the final official visit next weekend.
"Well it looks like we're going down to Ohio State," McDowell's father reported. "I guess he cleared it up with the coach. I guess he cleared it up with the coach at LSU that he wasn't really interested in LSU."
The talented youngster tweeted the schools he remains interested in last night.
That may not be the case much longer however. Michigan is also angling for some face time down the stretch. The verdict on whether they'll get that opportunity will very likely reveal a little more of a hierarchy.
"Actually I'm about to call Brady Hoke back," said Mr. McDowell. "I missed his call. They talked to his mom and left me a message about coming down there and getting an in-home too. Basically I'm going to go off what Malik wants to do because he has got to say whether or not he is still interested in all the schools pursuing him or whether he has narrowed it down to a top three or whichever way he is going to go."
Once that's determined the route to the end of the younger McDowell's recruitment will finally have some long-awaited clarity.
"I think we probably will have a few more in-homes... probably just meeting somewhere like at a restaurant," Mr. McDowell stated. "After this weekend if we're going to do this Ohio State (visit), I feel like when we come back from Ohio State he should know where he wants to be. With all of us involved we'll sit down as a family and figure out what's best for him."
"I want him to get the best out of (the recruiting) experience (and) the college experience and be somewhere where he is get the best education and get the opportunity to get to the level he wants. That's what I'm going to try to get him to understand. Instead of just focusing on one particular place you have to understand the history. Understand what the coaches have done for their players... sending them on to the next level, taking that talent and bringing the most out of it. That's what we're looking at. Everybody talks a good game when it comes to education, but when it comes to the education and the football part of it... I had to tell Malik you have to look at both of them."
Stay tuned for more on Malik McDowell's recruitment in the hours to come.
