U-M 'Very Very Appealing' to Newsome

Michigan made an extremely strong first impression on Lawrenceville (N.J.) Prep OT Grant Newsome during his visit to Ann Arbor last weekend. The Maize & Blue will have chance to repeat that effort in the very near future.

Grant Newsome had high expectations heading into his two day visit to Michigan last week.  By the time he left Ann Arbor they had all been met.

“I thought it was a really good visit,” said Newsome.  “I was very impressed with the whole program (especially) the coaching staff.  I got to experience the whole campus and the whole atmosphere.  I thought it was a very good visit.  I was very impressed.”

“Basically I got there midday Friday.  I met with some of the coaches there, Coach Funk and Coach Ferrigno.  From there I met with some of the academic staff, the strength and conditioning coaches.  Then from there I went over and spent the night with a player.  Then I woke up the next day and I had some more meetings with the coaching staff.  I was able to meet with Coach Hoke for a little while and then met with Coach Funk again.”

Newsome’s connection with his would-be position coach had already grown fairly strong through their phone and social media correspondence.  It only got stronger once they were face to face.

“I was really impressed with Coach Funk,” he said.  “He has always been one of my favorite O-line coaches and I think this trip just kind of cemented that in my mind.  It was really nice just to get an extended period of time to spend with him and to be able to get down there and talk some football.”

Helping Michigan’s cause even more was Newsome’s interaction with the players.  It proved to be just as impactful as his time with the coaches.

“I felt there was a good experience with guys there,” he said.  “It was a good experience to get to hang out  with them and get to spend time with guys you potentially might be playing with for the next four or five years.  In my opinion, they all seemed like pretty good guys.”

The rave reviews weren’t reserved for just the football portion of the visit.  The academic presentation also made its mark.

“I thought it was very impressive,” said Newsome.  “Obviously, Michigan in general is one of the strongest schools academically in the country.  It is definitely a big part of their appeal at Michigan… how strong they are academically… how well they can do as a football team not only on the field but also in the classroom.”

When the curtain fell on Newsome’s time with the Wolverines they had scored highly in aspect of the visit.  Needless to say the visit stacks up well with all the others he has been on, but he isn’t yet ready to announce a pecking order.

“I’m still pretty wide open at this point just trying to what other interests come in throughout the evaluation period,” he stated.  “I think Michigan is definitely a school that is very very appealing to me and offers a lot of what I am looking for in a school.  I think Michigan is definitely one of my top schools going forward.”

I’ll probably end up taking one or two in June.  I am definitely going to head back out to Michigan because my mom wasn’t able to accompany us on this past trip.  So she definitely wants to get out and see the campus for herself.  I’ll definitely be taking another trip out to Michigan sometime here in the near future.”

Not long after returning from those June visits Newsome plans to settle on a decision.

“I plan on committing sometime in June or July.  I am just going to take one official visit wherever that is.”
