“It caught me by surprise,” Hawkins admitted. “I didn’t know it was coming. I didn’t hear about Michigan even looking at me so that why it was a surprise. I didn’t even know.”
He also doesn’t know much about the Wolverines tradition-rich football program, but he hopes to change that in the not-too-distant future.
Said Hawkins, “I know they have one of the biggest stadiums and they have very good coaching staff and they have good academics but that’s about it.”
“I talked to Coach (Ferrigno) He’s very cool and he’s funny. He’s a nice guy. He talked to me about visiting (and) I think I’ll be going down there this summer.”
The only school he has visited thus far is South Carolina. That trip played a major role in putting the Gamecocks out front in his recruitment.
“It is nice down there,” said Hawkins. “It is a school and also a family. I don’t know – South Carolina is just sticking out right now. I like them a lot.”
Fortunately for the four-star wideout’s other suitors he isn’t in any rush to make a decision. He currently has 12 offers to his credit, but more are surely on the horizon. Two that he hopes eventually join the fold happen to be programs he followed growing up.
Whether those schools come calling or not Hawkins insists his decision will be based on substantive list of criteria.
“I’ll look at what is best for me, if I like it there, do they have my major, will I play right away, and is it a family,” he said. “I’m not sure when I’ll make a decision. I don’t even know. Whenever I feel that it is the best time to do it, I’ll do it.”
