The four-star standout, who stars for Reistertown (Md.) Franklin, admitted he was surprised when he first heard the news that U-M defensive coordinator Greg Mattison called his coach with an offer from the Maize & Blue.
"[Mattison] called my coach," Smothers said on his Michigan offer. "I had the offer for a week or two [before he told me]. But my coach just told me today. I'm really at a loss for words. A big school like that offering is shocking.
"I was pumped, I mean, what more can I say? It's Michigan!"
Now that the Wolverines have offered the 5-foot-9, 150-pound prospect, Smothers has officially put U-M in his top-six schools of interest. In no particular order, he says his top-six schools are West Virginia, Alabama, Florida, Florida State and Tennessee. And he also noted he will be visiting Ann Arbor this summer.
"I plan on visiting [Michigan] during the summer along with Oregon, Florida and USC," Smothers said. "[During my visit], I want to see how the players are treated, the football facilities and and education side of it all."
