The Opening: LB Osa Masina

Salt Lake City (Utah) Brighton linebacker Osa Masina continues to impress and is making a strong claim to be the No. 1 linebacker prospect in the West region.

Osa Masina arrived at The Opening 2014 as a top 60 player nationally but that will likely be adjusted the next time ratings are updated. He had a strong opening day, finishing in our top 10 for best defensive players of the day and could be the top overall 'backer in the West region.

Masina has great size, athleticism and energy. He plays with a relentless motor and his upside continues to grow leaps and bounds every time we see him.

"This has been an awesome experience so far," Masina said. “It's a lot of fun to meet all these guys that I keep reading about. Everyone is real cool and we’re all getting along great. The NIKE gear is incredible as well and I’m having a great time.”

On the recruiting front, Masina has a top eight of Arizona State, Michigan, Notre Dame, Stanford, UCLA, USC, Utah and Wisconsin. He’s planning his next cut very shortly.

“I plan on cutting my list to five by end of the week, probably Saturday or Sunday,” Masina said. “I can't say who looks good to make it right now, it could be any of my top eight so everyone will have to wait and see.

“As for my visits, my plan is to take all five and then commit at the Army Game but if I know before then, I'll go ahead and make it sooner. I won't delay it and take all five if after my second or third trip, I just know that’s the place for me. Right now, I don't have a leader so I'm going to play it out a little and go from there.”
