Michigan Rockets Up Lewis’ List

The Barbecue at the Big House appears to have sent tidal waves through the recruitment of Washington (D.C.) Gonzaga Prep DB Marcus Lewis.

One look at Michigan was all it took for Marcus Lewis shake up his leaderboard.

The longtime Florida commit saw Ann Arbor for the first time last weekend during the annual Barbecue at the Big House, and was blown away by the experience.

“I love it out here,” Lewis said afterward.  “It definitely exceeded (my expectations) times two.  I just had a great time out here.  I had a chance to sit down with the coaching staff… Coach Mallory, Coach Manning, Coach Mattison, Coach Hoke… I pretty much talked to every coach.  We just had really good conversation.  We talked about football and we talked about other things. I really had a great time.”

“I got a chance to see campus as a whole… the academics, the players… I pretty much saw everything.  I didn’t miss anything.”

Of the many visit highlights some of the most notable were his interactions with current Michigan players and recruits. Freshman defensive back Jabrill Peppers made a particularly strong impression.

“(Meeting Peppers) was great,” said Lewis.  “He is a focused dude, (especially) to be so young.  He has just got a certain mindset about him.  He is definitely ready.  Guys like Garrett (Taylor) and Tyree (Kinnel) that could potentially come in with me… those guys are really good players and we could definitely do something special.”

The possibility of teaming with the aforementioned Wolverine commitments was a frequent topic of conversation.  The more Lewis got to know his prospective teammates, the more appealing a future in a winged helmet began to sound.

“Garrett Taylor… by far I definitely connected with him the most,” he said.  “We spent a lot of time together.  (We) just did different things and talked about different stuff.  He is a good kid.  We didn’t always talk about football.  We talked about school... just different types of things.  You could tell he is a really good kid, so we’re definitely going to get along.”

That last statement may not be a slip of the tongue. While Lewis hasn’t yet made a final decision on which school he’ll ultimately attend, he has made a decision about where Michigan now stands on his list.

“They’re definitely high,” Lewis said of the Maize & Blue.  “They’re at the top.  They’re right at the top.”

That development has caused the four-star cornerback to rethink his official visit schedule as well.

“Right now it’s just Michigan… Michigan right now, and Oregon and Miami,” he replied when asked to lay out his itinerary.  “And that will probably be it.”

With his recruitment now officially turned on its ear Lewis plans to take some time to let things sink in a bit.  He wants to make sure that his second choice won’t be a hasty one.

“Right now we’re about to start the high school season, so I’m just getting ready for camp,” he said.  “We start camp next Friday, so I’m getting focused for that.  There’s no timetable set (to make a commitment), but more than likely in the fall I’ll make a decision.”
