ANN ARBOR, Mich. – With the resignation of Dave Brandon as Michigan’s athletic director, U-M president Mark Schlissel says the he will looking for certain characteristics in his next hire.

“The athletic director is a very important position at the university,” Schlissel said. “I’ll be looking for a person who prioritizes the welfare and experience of our student-athletes. A person of unquestioned creativity. Not just the level of integrity to NCAA rules. But integrity to the Michigan way of doing athletics.”

Brandon, who has served as U-M’s athletic director since 2010, told Schissel of his decision on Wednesday, and the resignation was announced today at the universities administration building. Brandon’s resignation is effective immediately. Jim Haskett has been named interim athletic director, however, is not a candidate for the permanent position.

“I’ll be looking for somebody who appreciates the bond, the cultural aspects of this great athletic program and what it does for our community,” Schlissel said. “And I’ll be looking for somebody who wants to make the athletic program as tightly integrated part of the overall university environment as possible.

"Beyond that, we’ve yet to move forward and define a more specific job description. But we will.”
