John Harbaugh: Family Not Pushing Jim to U-M

Ravens coach John Harbaugh says he doesn't know what his brother Jim will do following his fourth NFL season with the 49ers. Harbaugh also refuted reports the family is influencing his younger brother to head to Ann Arbor.

Current San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh might be sick of fielding questions on his future and now older brother John Harbaugh -- head coach of the Baltimore Ravens -- is fed up as well.

Reports have circulated for months regarding what the next move will be for Jim Harbaugh, likely to be a different gig in the NFL or a move that seems to have become very possible of late, taking over for Brady Hoke at the University of Michigan.

Answering questions Wednesday on a conference call with reporters in Cleveland leading up to the Ravens match-up with the Browns Sunday, the Michigan topic of course came up with John Harbaugh who had quite a few responses including a retort to a report indicating he and his father Jack could be encouraging brother Jim to head to Michigan.

ProFootballTalk’s Mike Florio writes:

"My dad and I both…I will say this: The report that said that his family is encouraging him to go to Michigan by Adam Schefter is absolutely incorrect," said Harbaugh. "There has been no family that I know of that has given him any advice at all because that's a personal decision. It's his to make, and that's just absolutely false. I don't know where that came from, but it didn't come from the Harbaughs.

“My dad and I both said, 'Hey, don't tell us.' If something gets out, we don't want the finger pointed at us. Just leave us out of it, and don't tell us what you're going to do. I think he's just trying to figure out what the next thing is for him, and more than anything, trying to have a great game on Sunday."

Harbaugh’s season with the 49ers officially wraps up Sunday against the Cardinals, several reports indicating his time in San Francisco will come to an end in the days to follow.

Either way, with all of the speculation and questions Harbaugh has dealt with throughout this entire period, older brother John is certain his brother has been a class act.

“I open up my [computer] and you look at Google and it’s Jim Harbaugh,” John said. “Perfect. Perfect, it’s all Jim. I will say this: I’m just proud of him. I think he’s handled this.

“He’s been a giant through all of this uncalled-for type of media onslaught sometimes that takes place. Not anybody’s fault, just the nature of the business. I think he’s handled it just perfectly.”
