Smothers: 'Big Honor' to Play For Harbaugh

Reisterstown (Md.) Franklin 2016 WR Steven Smothers talks Michigan, Jim Harbaugh and more.

Reisterstown (Md.) Franklin 2016 wide receiver Steven Smothers was “surprised” when Michigan announced the hire of Jim Harbaugh as its new coach. But now that the Wolverines have Harbaugh in place, Smothers says he’s going to visit U-M in the near future.

“I was surprised,” Smothers said on the Harbaugh hire. “You usually see college coaches go to the NFL rather than NFL coaches come to college. When I seen that, I was like ‘That’s a great hire.’ By them hire [Harbaugh], I’ll know he’ll get this program headed in the right direction.”

Next up for the four-star prospect is a visit to Michigan’s campus to see Harbaugh himself.

“In college football there is couple coaches that really stand out,” Smother said. “To play for Nick Saban, that’s a big honor. To play for Urban Meyer, that’s a big honor. To play for Harbaugh, that’s a big honor. I definitely want to get up there and get a chance to meet him and check the school out.”

Smothers also noted what else he would like to see on his possible visit to U-M.

“I want to see how the school it,” Smothers said. “I want to get there a good time after the coaching staff has been there and get the players reaction on the new coaches and how they feel about them. The school as a whole, those are really the main things.” Currently, Smothers holds double digit offers, however, he says West Virginia, Alabama, Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, Rutgers, Oregon, Tennessee and North Carolina are on his list of top schools.

Rated No. 145 player overall in the Scout 300 and No. 30 WR, Smothers was adamant about what he is looking for in a program.

“I am looking at the schools overall academics,” Smothers said. “I am seeing how strong the academic support team is. I want to see how good the football facilities are. I want to see the atmosphere of the school. And see how the coaches are and how they handle their players.”

Smothers continued:

“I am looking for a coach from day one to tell me, ‘Look, if you come here with the right mindset, the right attitude, work ethic, you can do X, X and Z.’ I don’t want coaches to say one thing and then when I get there it’s another. I want a coach to say something one day and when I get there they stuck their word. Just seeing how strong the coaches loyalty to is their school.”

As of right now, Smothers says he is planning a signing day decision.
