The University of Michigan women's basketball team made a late run and got within four points in the closing seconds but fell at No. 20 Iowa, 76-70, on last Thursday night (Jan. 22) at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Senior Cyesha Goree led the way for Michigan, recording a double-double with 26 points and 13 rebounds. Freshman Katelynn Flaherty scored 19 points off the bench, and sophomore Siera Thompson chipped in 10 points. Senior Nicole Elmblad just missed a double-double, finishing with nine points and 11 rebounds. Iowa shot 57.1 percent (32-for-56) from the floor, while U-M shot 46.8 percent (29-for-62). Michigan outrebounded the Hawkeyes, 37-25.
The Wolverines would bounce back four days later versus Illinois back in the comfortable comfines of Crisler Arena.
Katelynn Flaherty led all scorers with 21 points, while Cyesha Goree and Nicole Elmblad both recorded double digits in rebounds as Michigan improved to 10-1 at home with a 70-57 win over Illinois Monday night (Jan. 26).
Flaherty was 8-of-14 from the floor and 5-of-9 from three-point range for her fifth 20-point contest of the season. Goree stuffed the stat sheet with 19 points, 14 rebounds, four assists and three blocked shots for her 12th double-double of the season. Elmblad recorded a season high with 12 rebounds and dished out five assists. Shannon Smith and Siera Thompson, meanwhile, scored 13 and 12 points, respectively, as the Wolverines shot 53.8 percent from the floor and knocked down eight three-pointers.
