His Recruiting Story:
Shelton Johnson surprised many when he picked Michigan on signing day. A stout 6-foot-5, 225-pounds, Johnson was expected to choose nearby Florida State or Miami (Fla.), but ultimately choose the Wolverines. He took his official visit to Michigan on Jan. 16, and says his connection with U-M coach Jim Harbaugh was a major reason behind his commitment.
“Shelton Johnson still has to get stronger a little bit. But he’s long, rangy and athletic at 6-foot-5, 230-pounds. He’s the type of pass rusher who can put his in the dirt or stand up to come off the edge.” – Florida recruiting analyst Corey Bender
VIDEO CAPSULE REPORT:
Greg Mattison on Johnson:
"Shelton has all the physical characteristics necessary to be successful at the defensive end position. He has very high character and is an excellent football player. He will fit in perfectly in our scheme."
"Coach Harbaugh was a pretty good guy and down to earth. He always speaks the truth, speaks highly of his staff, and they're real confident in what they're going to build the program into. Since he coached in the NFL and with what he's done, I know he knows what he's talking about."
Johnson will need to add size his first year at U-M. However, there is opportunity to play on Michigan’s front four. He could end up redshirting, but depending on his fall camp, he could see some minutes next season.
