Michigan and Ohio State will only play once on the hardwood during the regular season.
Those are the big takeaways from the Big Ten Conference’s schedule announcement Thursday. It was an upsetting development especially for those fans that assumed the league had carried over from football its practice of protecting rivalries. Basketball schedules are randomly determined. Each team has five home & home opponents, and eight others that they will face only once (four at home and four away).
This isn’t the first time Wolverines has seen its rivals once in a season. Just last year Michigan faced Ohio State once in the regular season, and faced Michigan State once in the regular season during the 2008/2009 campaign.
None of the programs have expressed a desire to square off in a non-league affair.
Setting aside for a moment the disappointment that comes with this competitive oversight, playing the Buckeyes and Spartans once actually sets up a pretty favorable conference slate for the Maize & Blue.
