Rahshaun Smith can legitimately lay claim to being one of the most heavily recruited prospects in the country. The IMG Academy defensive end says his offer list now up to 50, and that includes virtually every traditional power in the country. Needless to say, all of those programs were blown away by his junior year performance.
“I finished first team All-Conference… first team All-everything,” Smith said proudly. “I finished with 111 tackles, two interceptions, 12 tackles for loss, two sacks. I’m fast, physical, and I play downhill and sideline to sideline.”
The 6-3, 231-pounder can be a force from defensive line, but wants to be an inside linebacker at the next level. Most of his suitors probably won’t quibble over that, choosing instead to let him play where he wants. That leaves his focusing his attention on other very important decision-criteria.
“There are a lot of things that I look at for separation,” said Smith. “I look at the coaches. Coaches play a big part in my decision. Coaches leave on a week by week (basis). When I say I look at coaches, I don’t look at it like, ‘I like this coach because he’s going to put me in the league.’ I look at like, ‘I like this coach because I can tell that in his program they bring in coaches who are going to be there when there is not football.‘ That’s one of the biggest things I look at, coming from where I come from (with) my background. I also look at style… how do they ball? Who’s come through their program and done their thing and things like that.”
Michigan’s coaching staff began working in earnest last month to build a strong rapport with the talented youngster, and the Wolverines have made very good headway in that short period of time.
“I talked to Coach Harbaugh and Coach Partridge, said Smith. “I definitely love them. Coach Partridge… he’s definitely been in my ear. We communicate on a weekly basis on Twitter. I’m definitely getting a good vibe off Michigan. I definitely want to get up and visit the school.”
“It is not very much that I know about them,” he continued. “I know Coach Harbaugh is going to change the place around. Where I’m at right now with it, I’m just looking to get up and get a feel for the place. I don’t have no set dates at this time. I definitely see myself getting up there.”
Until then expect the Wolverines to continue to increase the intensity of their pursuit. As it stands they have some ground to make up in that department.
“I’m still open to my decision (and) I don’t have any favorites, but Clemson is definitely recruiting me hard,” said Smith. “Ole Miss is starting to recruit me hard, Alabama is recruiting me hard now. Those are just a few that are recruiting me hard.”
“I’ll be finishing school in December and I’m (going to be) an early enrollee. So I’m trying to get my process done and speed mine up a little bit.”
