Oregon LB 'Suprised" to Receive U-M Offer

Portland (Ore.) Central Catholic junior OLB Lamar Winston talks Michigan offer, his relationship with a current student athlete, a potential visit this year and more.

Portland (Ore.) Central Catholic junior outside linebacker Lamar Winston admitted he was a little surprised when Michigan extended an offer his way earlier this month. But besides the offer to play football in the Big Ten, it also gave the four-star standout a unique opportunity to attend school with one of his good friends.

"Initially I was just surprised and thankful," Winston said. "Because I have a friend that goes to Michigan and I have heard great things about it -- [Michigan freshman basketball player] Kameron Chatman -- he is from Oregon. I kind of grew up with him playing basketball and stuff. I play basketball as well. That's how I know Kameron. I was just excited."

What's Chatman's message to Winston about Michigan?

"He's saying that he likes it at Michigan a lot," Winston said of Chaptman's feedback. "It's been fun. He's obviously had to work for his spot."

And the thought of going to school with Chatman has Winston very much intrigued.

"It does," Winston admits. "Because I know I am not going out there alone, blind. Going out to a college by yourself is sort of scary. It's good to hear that I got a friend that I know who I have known for years. He's already in college and he's not much older than me. I might get a year or two with him depending how well he plays."

Next up for Winston he says is a visit to Michigan this spring-summer.

"I definitely going to get out to visit," Winston said. "I don't know when though. I know for sure though I am trying to make a visit.

"I definitely want to see how the coaches react to the players. I want to talk to a couple of the players and see how they like it. How they like the school. Is it a good community surrounding the players? That's a huge thing, you can't go to a school where you don't have much support. Especially with me coming form so far from home. I would love it if I can go to a place that make me feel like it home."

At the moment, Winston says he has only been on campus visits to Washington and Oregon State. However, he says he should be taking campus visits to USC, UCLA, California and Oregon in the coming months.
