"I've been talking to Coach [Chris] Partridge," Gatling said. "I like Michigan a lot. They are shooting up on my list right now.
"I want to talk with their defensive backs coach. That's one of my criteria. I want to have a good relationship with my position coach. I like Michigan a lot though. They have good history.
One thing that stands out about Michigan, Gatling says, is the opportunity to play for coach Jim Harbaugh.
"They got coach [Jim] Harbaugh]," Gatling said. "I feel like if you go to Michigan right now, you're going to play in the NFL. And that's my major goal for my football career. I really want to get up there for a visit and see the campus. It's more about interacting with the coaches more. We just kind of started contacting each other last week."
Next up for Gatling is a visit to Ann Arbor for an unofficial visit, however, only if the coaches want him to come up, he says.
"It's really about if the coaches want me to come up there and how much interest they have me," Gatling said. "If they invite me I am going to go up there and check it out. I just want to see what Michigan has to offer as well as academics and football. I might go up there this spring or this summer. It's really about if the coaches like me and stuff."
And if the Wolverines were to offer?
"It would mean a lot," Gatling said. "It would be 1A LSU and 1B Michigan. Basically at the top of my list.
The Tigers, who offered on Feb. 21 on junior day, still have the lead for his services, Gatling says.
"I got a real good relationship with my position coach down at LSU and my area recruiter," Gatling said. "I am going to be visiting there again soon."
Besides LSU, Gatling holds an offer from Navy. He says he plans on attending Florida State for its spring game, South Carolina this weekend for junior day and has already been on a visit to Vanderbilt.
As far as a decision timeline, the 5-10-185-pounders says he hopes to have that resolved sometime this summer.
"I want to make my final decision before summer is up," Gatling said. "Before my senior season get started. I just want to be focused on winning that state championship in the end. Just focusing on my team, my season rather than going through all this recruiting hoop-la."
